HELP! munchkins
    #3383902 - 11/19/04 01:29 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

someone who isn't me is having a problem with her cubes. the mushrooms seem to pop their veil very soon and not grow very large at all, they grow about two inches and release their spores. she is using WBS cased with 50/50+ in Rubbermaid terrarium w/ cool mist (24/7) and ultrasonic humidifiers and two fluorescent lamps hanging about 6 inches from the top of the casings. what could she possibly do to remedy this problem? is there something she could be doing wrong to produce such small mushrooms? is it possible that this is strain specific? (she is using Vietnam) Also, when the mushrooms drop their spores, they start to turn black at the edges of the top of the cap; it's slimy and can be wiped off. is this contam? any advice will be much appreciated

thanks in advance

first off, the black is spores, especially since it can be wiped off when fresh.

how deep is the colonized wbs in the casing she did? shallow substrate can cause stunted growth.

I don't think you need both of those flouros, one would be good enough for me.

1/2inch 50/50+ ontop of 1" (approx 1 pint) wbs substrate ontop of a 1/2inch perlite

How do spores get on top of the cap? swim thought that spores fell from the gills.

i'll tell her to chunk the 2nd lamp... do you think too much light could be causing the problems?

thats your problem is that the substrate is to shallow
the thiker (deeper) it is the bigger the mushies will grow
if you get a caseing with 4 inches of substrate and a inch of casing your mushies can get 6-12 inches big (atleast I have seen it in my expieriences)

spores are not very heavy. Unnoticable air currents carry them to unpredictable locations, including the tops of caps.

Also, I hear tell of spores migrating through the top of the cap, but I don't know about that one.

okay so there is no contam. is there anything she can do to prevent the caps from dropping their spores so early? (increase/decrease humidity and/or light exposure)
also, could she spray/mist the casing while there are mushrooms growing? Would this make them larger?
