Contam ID Help (Pic)
    #3383349 - 11/19/04 10:54 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

These strange yellowish orange spots are appearing at a few inoculation points. Several days of observation reveals the the mycellium takes over the spots fine, and nothing interferes. Any ideas? I was thinking it's this common "mycellium piss" except it showed up in one spot before any mycellial growth.

Thanks in advance

Yeah, it could be myco-pee, but it could be the beginnings of bacteria or mold. I assume it looks 'liquid' and not fuzzy? Regardless, the best thing to do is continue to incubate and watch it. A real contaminant will be obvious in the next few days.

Hey Suntzu,

It looks liquidy if anything. On the other jar the spot stayed that size for days, zero growth. When the mycellium overtook it you could still make out the yellow/orange area, but it is mainly covered over by mycellium.

Strange, huh?

The fact that it showed up BEFORE myc kinda rules out the myco-pee theory I would think.

I think you're right. . .so it's just the tiny spot seen in the pic, hasn't gotten any bigger? Of course, you should keep in mind that what you see in a jar is only the very outer surface area. There's a lot of other interior areas that could have problems that you won't see. I'm not saying there's definitely a problem, it's just good to be cautious. Keep on watching it and make a [conservative] judgement call.

24 hours later the mycellium has completely overtaken it, and the spots are almost not visible at all anymore.
