Choosing your Myths

Random Poster: I think the idea of a rabbi dying on a tree for me is just a fairy tale. I will however, swallow the myth of karma and reincarnation without any evidence.
I don't understand why sometimes peoples' brains actually function when evaluating data, then other times logic goes straight out the window. What is so difficult about applying THE SAME STANDARDS to all mythology to see if it holds water?

I can think of a reason or two.
1. Pragmatism. If Random Poster gets little out of Christianity, but finds that Buddhism or Hinduism works for them, they won't hold it up to constant skepticism like they may hold the former.
2. In the western world, for some it comes down to the teenage "fuck authority" mentality. Christianity is the encumbant religion, eastern religions are distant alternatives, and are "swallowed" at face value.

I think you've just got to accept that people will choose whatever myths they choose. Once they've settled on something, no amount of reason will make them reconsider. That's just how humans work (me included I guess). I don't believe in reincarnation or karma, but I think the way those are presented in Buddhism (at least in some versions), they're good 'pictures' and thus good myths.

Thinking's hard, that's why most people take frequent breaks from it and defer to designated authorities such as churchs, winners of government run popularity contests, news people reading from teleprompters and ad executives to do their thinking for them.

We must make certain assumptions in order to accept any of the reality we experience. I have to assume that logic and the scientific method are viable means of arriving the truth. I have to assume that the world at least somewhat resembles the way I percieve it. I have to assume that the same scientific laws apply equally everywhere and at all times. None of these assumptions can be proven to be true, thus I require a leap of faith to believe in them. Some people just prefer to take a bigger leap than others.

Well, I believe in myths I know that are complete bullshit, childish, colourful and maybe even sweet, and only because they are smoothier and swettier and larger than the real ones. Makes my life more cool ya know, I can at anytime claim I saw a lepricon for sure
