overcolonization?

is it possible to overcolonize rye jars?  I'm asking because I made a bunch using mags method, which turned out to work really well... they were done real fast but i think i waited too long to case them because its been almost two weeks since they were cased, and the mycelium isnt growing out of the berries hardly at all... i cased with 50/50 top and bottom bout half inch and bout half inch of substrate so.... any thoughts?? :syringe: :eek:

Most likely has to do with the thin substrate layer. The normal ratio for substrate/casing should be 1:2...not certain this is all of the problem, but pretty sure your substrate layer is slowing down the process.

does the separate parts have to be closer together so they can transport nutrients and water across the whole body?the mycelium i mean

I don't think so, AFAIK, you only have to worry about it becomming dry. Think that's a possibility?

maybe cause if they were in 83 degrees too long i mean theres airflow through the polyfil and the lids arent completely tight i leave a little loose for air damn i was rolling too! theres like 10 more in there i think have been done for like 5 days at least! jeeez guess ill make some new ones

I am having the same problem with my rye casing, just seems to be colonizing extremely slow, I'm even keeping one on a heating pad for incubation and that doesn't seem to be helping.

This one I used a 1" substrate layer with 1/4" casing, 50%peat 50% verm.

I'm thinking I need to balance pH, I really don't know tho.

oh yeah right before i cased, i threw some hydrated lime in the casing soil and mixed it up!! i didnt measure it and i know i might have put way too much in there. half an oven bag should only get like a spoonful right?

well to find out if you over limed it, go buy soil PH test kit.. they're not too expensive. 5-10$ in most gardening sections.... the slow growth to me indicates a thin substrate layer... at least.. keep hope alive its a thin substrate layer
