You're living in a dream if you think we have 100 years before the next big depression. Damn, I will be happy if the human race make it to 2100. Anyway, the problem will not be a lack of gas thats for sure. We'll find something better long before a lack of gas. We have enough gas for 80 years last time I checked and we find nore each day. Perhaps africa will suffer from it but certainly not us. Dark days are coming IM sure of it

The concept of bartering is very primative and archaic. It's based in greed: "Give me something in exchange for something". You can witness the same behavior in apes fighting for a bannanna. Entire economic systems are based on that simple premise. In todays world money has become a mechanism for control. For many people, the amount of money they have is equivalent to the amount of freedom they have. This is why justice systems take your money away as a form of punishment. This can make your life very difficult....it's kinda like being a prisoner without a prison. Moderated strife. It should have no place in a civilized society. Whether or not you believe WE can be civilized enough to help eachother in the event economic collapse says A LOT about YOU. It would certainly be a test for humanity to see if people could work together.

..'Kerry' would have been MORE of a dickweed president then 'Bush' anyway, I hate both Republicans and Democrats...I know war sucks but the war is too far into it, it would be a joke to see Kerry calling the shots....I never voted, I already knew who was going to win the electoral votes here anyway, it would have been a waste of time.. Who cares if the economy sucks, I got a new job with more hours...I am happier that I am going to get more money, the food industry is a good one...a lot of people like to eat food..

The economy is going to suddenly collapse on the 4th?
Like what, it'll just explode or something?

I'd like to think that if everything fell down around us, that we would help each other to survive... but it just really seems so unrealistic.
Maybe what might happen would be that people in more surburban or remotely populated areas might have less resources but will be more willing to help out thier neighbors. I can see people in bigger meteropolitan areas with the most resources being a lot less helpful towards thier 'friends' and neighbors.
But if such a downfall would last long enough, everything just might balance itself out as city people expanded outwards into the suburban and generally unpopulated areas to use new resources and vice versa for the country folk.
So...that might put us right back to where we are now.....Hmmm.
We're doomed. I blame Dubya.

Well that's part of the problem: cities don't have a lot of resources. Any major city could not survive for very long if it was cut off from the outside world. Food doesn't grow in cities. Power usually comes from outside the city, along with water and just about every other tecnhological life-support system that we rely on.
A VERY EXCELLENT set of shows, by a guy named James Burke, is the "Connections" series. It's from the mid-70's but is even MORE relevant these days (and will probably continue to grow more relevant as we rely more and more on technology).
Most of us live emersed in a VAST inter-connected network of technology, without which we can neither feed nor clothe ourselves. Because it has become so interconnected, if you remove one peice the whole system can come tumbling down. The more interconnected the system becomes, the higher the possibility of a MAJOR shutdown.
Oh, and don't think it's so unrealistic, bomb
No major human civilization has lasted for all human history. They all come falling down at some point or another, so isn't it pure arrogance to think that ours will be any different?
I embrace the comming collapse. Pick your spot and ride the wave through to the other side!
