maintaining temp within terrarium...
    #3380134 - 11/18/04 05:20 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

hey all...
let me first say that i am a proud father of 9 1/4 colonized jars (yea, im a noob) but it wouldnt be without the help from this community...anyways ive been recording the temps in the location of my terrarium, and they average between 64-70 during the day, and possibly lower at night...i am using the poor mans pod method, and i have an 18 gallon chamber...what would be the best method to bring up and maintain the temp? ive considered getting a submersible aquarium heater, but i was worried that even if it was sitting below the geolite, it might cook the cakes...if i am crazy for thinking this, then what watt aquarium heater would be effective? thanks in advance for any and all help....

Depends of the volume of water you are using in ur pod, depending on the size of your tub.

4 inch geolite? 2 inch water? I would buy 100W or more. Thats enough to heat about 100 liters to 32 C / 90 F. But you might want to use a bigger tub in the future then the 100w is still comfortable. Even if you buy a 200W the price is not much higher.

When it is in the water it wont heat the cakes, it will heat the water...

I am also a starter mate, but have some aquarium xperience and read a lot about the mushrooms.

Really a 200W heater is maybe 1 or 2$ more. I was dumb and bought a 75w and a 100W. When its going strong here ill be needing a larger one for my TiT, but well see.....

Anyway the heater wont harm ur cakes, buy one where you can set the temperature on with a wheel or a pin!

I'm in the same situation myself. I'm using a 50 watt submersible heater and it seems like it cant get pass 78/F. Definitely go for the 100watt heater.

Are you using the same tub for incubating as you are for your eventual fruiting? It sounds like you are and that's the same error I made at first. Buy a seperate tub and use the no seal tek. Buy two tubs of the same size, an aquarium heater (submersible), and just fill one up with water to were it will touch the other tub. Put heater in that water and the other tub on top. I suggert putting towels around the edge as that's what I did and it seals the heat in there fine. Then you have a incubator that should be able to keep you up around 75-85 all day long. Right now you are very far below optimal incubating temps, so they will colonize very slow adding more time for contams to get in there.

LOL, my PmP's cost 125.00 a peice all said and done. I dont know if thats for the poor man or not, but building a TiT is definately a good suggestion.

Hey cmk, do you only have cakes in them or also casings?

My PmP costs about

5? geolite
20? heater
10? rubbermaid
20? hygro/thermometer
5? airpump
5? hoses and airstones

Total of about 65 Euros, which makes some 70$.

Dont know if that is poor mans pod, but for that price one can trip a lot here!

Not to mention the investments in a PC , jars, H2O2, Vermiculite, BRF, Rye, Popcorn, alufoil, polyfill, TiT (2 tubs + heater + thermometer = 35?) and one syringe..(7,5 ?)

But only PMP + TIT = 100? here.

My incubator cost about $20 Canadian including the heater
I haven't fruited in it but I will.
You may want a larger one.

here are some pictures of it and a short writeup in it.
easy to clean and keep dry too since the water is closed in.
if I want humidity in it I'll mist or put a bowl of wet vermiculite in it.
