are visuals important?
    #3378466 - 11/18/04 08:45 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

When I had my first shroom experiences and after that acid I was really looking forward to see hallucinations. And although I was somewhat disappointed with my visuals because they were less extreme than I had read about beforehand, they were still very enjoyable. So I started trying higher doses to get more and better visuals. This only worked to a limited degree and I was getting a bit frustrated. I had great trips, but they weren't very visual. My visuals, even on shrooms and acid taken simultaneously, weren't as spectacular as half the trip reports I had read, and they describes only shrooms OR acid. This lead me to 2 possible conclusions. Maybe my brain just creates less visuals than someone elses. Or maybe most trip reports exagerate the discription of visuals. This can easly be true because it is so difficult to discribe in words the intesity of what you feel during a trip.

At some point I tried 2CB a few times and I found it actually boring. It gave me visuals, but that didn't mean anything to me during these experiences. At this point I started to realise that the visuals of shrooms and acid are not really a big deal if you don't feel anything about them. Both shrooms and acid give you extraordinary feelings about everything you experience and that's what makes them so special. With this insight I let go of my focus on visuals and had much better trips since, because I could finally let go and accept what the trip was giving me. And as a bonus my visuals also got better! (still not as extreme as quite a few trip reports, but that doesn't bother me anymore)

I think I am not the only one to get trapped in this obsession about viuals (I still like them btw) and this might have something to do with the society we live in. We are taught to live very visually oriented (tv, how you look). Also shrooms and acid are called hallucinogens which suggests that hallucinations are the most important effect they create. To me the most important effect has become the emotional intesity they create with which I experience everything when I trip (including visuals, but more than anything: music).

I thinks it's just because visuals are just really fun and exciting. They aren't very important to me, although when i trip and have visuals it's a definite plus. I've had many trips that were just as enlightening, but without much visuals. Sometimes when i eat mushies i just see an odd light on everything. The emotional intensity is great sometimes, but i do get carried away on occasion like a mad man :p Music is more important to me when i'm tripping than visuals.

Edit: I just realized how oddly i type after being up all night and having some coffee. Hmm...

They are so fun, I'm glad that I have tons of visuals while on shrooms.  but the trip can be an inward trip too.

For me, its not about visuals. I dont see stuff thats not there, but I have distorted perception of anything that I concentrate on. Try staring at anything for a few minutes. It should change shape or move.

After being told what halucinations were like, by popular culture, I had the expectation that I would be thrust into a cartoon world of unpredictable sights and sounds. I thought it would be like that movie, Who Framed Roget Rabbit, in that the real world and the world of halucinations would intermingle and I would get to interact with the normally unseen.

After taking halucinogens, I dove headfirst into a downward spiral of conspiracy theories and doublethought. It turned out not to be what I saw and heard, but what I thought. My output, of thought, was affected way more severely than my input, of sight and sound etcetera.

I don't understand these trip reports I read about people taking absurd amounts of drugs and just "going with the flow" of insanity. That flow changes me. It twists and molds and bends and shatters the straight line of logic and reality that exists only inside my skull until the things I think and create are no longer recognizable as something from "me." I wanted to halucinate, but I wanted to be myself doing it.

That all changed when I took Salvia Divinorum. The ego loss with sally is so complete and instant that I don't have time to lament about losing myself. Before I can possible regret having altered myself, I am altered forever, and subsequently reformed with a tiny understanding of what it means to lose myself.

With mushrooms, the onset is so fucking slow that every moment that passes I know I am losing myself a little bit more. I have already bought my ticket for this rollercoaster and been strapped in. The one time that that wasn't the case with mushrooms, I took about 5 grams in a tea. I remember it hitting me so fast, I had forgotten that I had taken a drug. As soon as I was reminded that I taken a drug I became extremely frightened because I understood that I was losing myself and losing myself was not why I had taken the drug. But for those few moments between starting to peak and being told to "settle down, you're fucked up," I was free. I was free like a child is free to explore and understand the universe for the first time.

Right now I am scared shitless of mushroom induced ego loss. If I ever try it, I'm going to have to do it ass backwards from how I believe I should do it. Like they train arachnophobes to overcome their fear, or train body builders to lift incredible weights, I will take small doses and step up my training to be able to trip with more confidence.

I should probably just take a heroic dose and come back safely, but I'm just too scared.

When i tripped for the first time, almost 2 years ago, I was looking for the hallucinations and expected fun rides like a movie, the trip reports that i have read before gave me the false impression.

Now i know that the most important part is the things i feel emotionally and the different outlook of life and my personality i may get. The visuals are fun play, but they are not the essence from tripping.

But still, it is good to enjoy them when they are there, one should always value beauty in life, even knowing that it is illusionary. One should be able to enjoy it, without being attached to it. And the hallucinations may be the most beautiful things i have ever seen.

By the way, lately i find that music has MUCH greater effect on me than the visuals, i may see crazy stuff and smile at it cooly, but the music touches my inner world greatly. I have experiemneted once in a trip, to see how music changes my world. I was at the computer and changed songs and music styles one after the other, and each changed immediately how i felt and even how the room looked like. It is amazing to what different worlds music can bring us into!!

i too used to take mush for the visuals, just because i think that the visuals are just great! closed eye visuals are the best! another good thing about visuals is you can have a pretty solid recolection of what you say, when in comparison with thoughts you have, it is very difficult to sum that up into words, which i think is why many trip reports focus on the visual aspect...who knows...after my last trip, at a very low dose, level 2, maybe 3 i had the greatest thoughts and conversations, very insightful, and empathetic, it was the greatest trip ive had, and now the emotional state of being is what i look forward to :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

it depends on what i'm doing for the trip...if i am sitting in one place, listening to music or watching a movie, the open eye visuals can be very intense for me. my first time, i ate 1.75g and was blown away by what i was seeing...patterns and geometric shapes and colors covering the walls and ceiling, wood grain on the coffee table looked like liquid, i got on the computer and the letters were growing, shrinking, and pulsating..the open space of the room was filled with what looked like an endless net of colors and shapes...i don't think everyone gets open eye visuals as vividly as i do, cause i've had arguments about this before...on the other hand, if i am at a concert, or outdoors on a walk, the scope of the world is so huge that i don't notice the visuals very much..tree branches might bend and look like they're breathing, but it's more about the emotions and insights when surrounded by nature. indoors though, sometimes the visuals are so real and intense i feel like i am on a short acid trip.

They can affect the trip quite a bit.

If I'm outside during a sunny day, the bright colours will make for a hella happy trip. Sometimes they make things confusing because sometimes you can't figure out what you're looking at, but thats usually just at a pretty high dose (5+ grams).

with mushrooms, there are four active chemicals, the different amount of these must change the trip? eg one chemical higer than last time etc.
When i first triped properly (took 40 g of cyascens) it was a very friendly moment! i had a qick walk round my local park with mny ipod for a while and then sat on a bench, i started noticing the grass kind of liquifying i was so excited, becuase i had never had mushrooms work before!! I sat there in love with it! I made my way home and and all my deodorant cans wire bouncin up and down, my phone buttons where boucning up and down, and when i layed on my bed i could see colidascopes on the ceiling, also the ceiling would move up and down. tiles in my kitchen with images of fruit would move side to side like ringing bells, it was totally unique!! i have never been able to get the same effect moving wise with objects, but i can get the same effect colour wise and objects becomeing blurry/distorted!!!

it must be down to the amount of each chemical in the shroom, well that's what i think anyways!!

also its almost, if not truely impossible to see things that aren't there, people who say they had oranges chasing them and dinosaurs roaring down their street, probally didn't take any drug what so ever!

i said this in another thread, but, tripping is art, when you look at a painting do you just judge by if it looks good or realistic? or do you think about what the painter was thinking about when he painted it, does it remind you of somethign about yourself?

imo, mental > visiuals

if you like it just for the visiuals go for it, do what you like, it's all good, someone telling someone how or what to do psychedelics for is like arguing about how to look at sunset, just do what you feel is right.

I think they are a metaphor for material that happens to be in your consciousness at that moment.
As they can be so beautiful, its easy to get hung up on the eye candy thing but possibly, just to let them go their own way, I think, this is when insights come to you.
Above describes introspective closed eye shrooming, if Im socialising or outside and Im not introspecting, this is when the open eye ones come into play, again, colourful etc and distorted shapes of people/things. Clouds take on a "honeyomb" appearance to me on shrooms and there seems to be a reptillian skin texture somehow.

The visual effect of mushrooms to me is a temporary improvement in the sharpness and clarity of my vision, and making everything appear to be more real. And although the visual data appears to be the same as normal, I have a sense (though not limited through vision alone) that everything is bigger than normal.

The visual effect of weed to me is a temporary loss of what's real, leading me to question whether the things that I am seeing are actually there or are being created by my mind, and a sense of seeing images that are not really there within the context of the 'overall scene' (for example, a pile of clothes could easily resemble a face).

In either case, I don't actually have any visuals or hallucinations per se. But when I combined both (and I've only done this once), things became incredibly colourful and I hallucinated a lot. It becomes like something that you would see portrayed in a movie where someone is supposed to be on acid or something, completely overwhelming and unpredictable visuals, colours, recognisable figures, writing, patterns, characters, images, faces, the lot.

Is that important? It depends on what I'm looking for in a particular experience.

I've reached level 5 before, and I've read a lot about people saying they've never seen things that aren't there. I did. Definately. I've seen myself standing on the other side of the room, then blinked and found myself standing where I was looking looking back at twhere I was before. hard to explain. very weird

I love the visuals. They have a calming effect.

I remember the first time I tripped I was tripping with my best friend. I had an AWESOME trip and loved it. My friend on the other hand had an awful trip and spent the night curled up on the couch freaking out. I asked him the next day if he saw anything cool and I was truly shocked when he said he didnt see anything at all. I remember thinking "God, that trip would have sucked if it weren't for the cool visuals." Last time I ate mushrooms I didn't get any visuals, and lo and behold I had a very uncomfortable trip.

Personnaly, I love the visuals. While the mind games and thoughts are interesting, and I enjoy that aspect almost just as much - the visuals are one of the main reasons why I do psychadelics.

On my last trip of LSD, I was staring at a picture - I just let my eyes relax, my mind let go, and let the picture do what it wanted - after staring at it long enough, the scene just kept unravling and getting more complex, and showing me more detailed scenes and more beautiful things - I cant even begin to describe what it looked like.

But after I saw that, its like my entire mind and body rejoyced and put me into a rather euphoric state of mind, I almost cried its how amazing it looked.

I'd be staring at the picture, and it'd start to blend/melt together, then a section of the picture would 'pop up' and morph, and then start to unravel in a new way showing new things, then a part of that would pop up and morph, and then start to unravel and show more things, this happened about 5 or 6 times, all while this was going on, I was being pulled into the picture - I was IN what I was seeing, I was no longer sitting at my desk, looking at my screen, I was out of my body and in this world that my mind was creating from the picture.

It was a powerfull moment - and one that still has me fully lost for words to describe it.

kaniz, that sounds remarkably like an experience I had on weed when staring at the plastic window of a large tent that I was sat in at a rock festival at night (except without the whole "being pulled into the picture" bit).  I almost forgot about that; great night.
