Mushroom plant closes, 225 now job-searching
November 17, 2004

A mushroom-producing plant farm in Ganges Township, built in 1972 and employing more than 225 people will close its doors Jan. 6.
Money's Foods, the U.S. subsidiary of the Canadian company, Money's Mushrooms, is located at 1501 62nd St. They purchased the plant farm from Vlasic Company in 2000. Prior to that the farm was operated by the Campbell Soup Co. Shortly after becoming the owner of the mushroom operation, Money filed for protection under a Chapter 11 bankruptcy law.
The company will also close two other mushroom plants in Howe, Ind. and Pascadero, Calif.
"This was a tough but necessary decision to make. Currently the economics of our business in the United States requires that we make changes for the sake of our business as a whole.
"We appreciate the hard work of all the people at these locations," said Keith Potter, the president and chief executive officer of Money's Mushroom, Ltd.
He said the decision to close the plant was based on supply and demand imbalance and suppressed margins that have had a negative impact on the industry as a whole and on the company's business.
Headquartered in Toronto, Potter also attributed the closing to the company's inability to be profitable in a very competitive environment.
Money's Mushrooms Ltd. is a North American producer and marketer of fresh mushrooms and mushroom products.
Employees will be assisted in a job search and retraining by the Allegan County Michigan Works office.
The full impact of the closing has not yet been determined by Allegan County treasurer Sally Brooks, Ganges Township or the Fennville School District. In addition to Ganges, many employees are believed to live in Clyde, Lee and Casco townships.

Maybe this would be a good oportunity for a local shroomer to pick up some professional supplies at liquidation prices!
