Martha vs. Poor Man's Pod
    #3377189 - 11/18/04 01:46 AM (12 years, 24 days ago)

I hate to start what seems like a typical newb post, but hey I need a fruiting chamber and I can't seem to find any posts comparing the two using the search function..

What are the pros and con's of each? Which would be better for casings?

The martha would be more ideal for casings but either work. But mainly, the martha is a lot bigger than most pmp's. I would say it just depends on how big of a setup you want because they're both great fruiters.

Wow, pitting two of my creations against each other. The pod is made for cakes and the martha can do either. The pod can have probs with casings if there are to many in it. They cover to much of the geolite surface but with only a few it has no probs.

Well I did see some pretty big rubbermaid containers at Wally's world... >175L so it seems you could make a pretty big PMP. But in general, it seems as far as space utilization goes, the Martha is really superior. Even in a 175L Rubbermaid which looks deep enough for two layers, you would have to pick the top one off to look at the one below. I'd imagine it'd be a lot more comfortable taking your nice casings off the shelf.

Does the PMP have any sort of edge as far as ease of use (ie don't have to worry about gas exchange / overhumidifying?) or cost are concerned? Contamination? Maybe someone needs to do an in depth shootout? :P

Magash, if I put some jars on the Geolite and fridgeshelves on them to carry casings (with 1 or 2 inches inbetween them) does that improve the situation.

I mean better then covering the geolite with casings?

I'm going to be putting shelves in my PMP soon, but the problem is getting it right so that growing shrooms don't hit either the shelving, or the tub lid.....

I dont know if my PMP is high enough 1,33 feet or summit to have both a layer of geolite and 2 floors of growing mushrooms above each other.

The shelve on jar thingy was more the idea taht the geolite is not covered so it can breath the humid air better with the PmP.

But wondering if that makes sense!

1,3  feet hight enough for bottom layer and two casings? I have my doubts.... Maybe to have casings start pinning on the shelv when the casing below is harvested it can fruit in the lower store giving room for new "to pin casings" at the shelv...

eh, you don't need 2 shelves of geolite.... the whole chamber is humidified, all you need to do is add some racks. That is assuming it's tall enough in the first place.

Nonono dont misunderstand, me.

1st plan:
- geolite bottom with the heater and the water and the airwand. Cakes casings on the geolite.

current plan:
- 1st plan + a fridgeshelv on 4 jars above it so the air can coem easier through from the geolite while nothing is covering it directly.
Cakes and casings on teh shelf.

id like the venture and say:

you could more than likely use a tub of perilite or geolite to humidify your martha. You'd have to run some tests to see how much of what ya needed to get a good RH, but if you set your hygro. in the martha somewhere you can monitor the humidity.

Yeah, you could do that. The main advantage to a cool mist/ultrasonic setup is that it provides air exchange. You could theoretically find an aquarium pump that would exchange the air in something as big as a Martha adequately, but it will be expensive.

rumors go on that the whole humification setup maintaining a constant 100% rh
and adequate air exchange within a martha could be assembled with max 50$ ...
but its just rumors ...

The airpump I found directly which circulates 3000 liters an hour (martha containing about 1000 liters of air) is costing 77?. It has exits for 6 hoses/airstones/bubblewands.

On ebay here there is a new 3000* liter an hour pump sold for 50?.

But I dount if those cool mist toys circulate that much air! So I think 1500-2000 liter an hour will be enough.

I like the combination of PmP and Martha, was thinking bout it before.

If you start with a martha maybe its no idea, but if you upgrade from PmP to Martha it IS an idea imho.

I've pretty much decided on the Martha. The only problem is, I don't believe we have any Kmarts here. Any other places to get one?

k, it is possible to maintain a proper 100% rh and constant air exchange
using a propengator filled with perlite and a bubbler inside.

basically, thats a heated pmp, so, placing an adequatebly large pmp in the base of ur martha
and cranking up the bubbler, will give u the required humidity.

end of line.

Anyone know the ideal amount of shelves one can put in a Martha?

(wow that sounds vulgar
