First Casing Attempt A Failure, 2nd Try And A Question.

As the title says my first casings failed misserably, I was fighting contams the whole way. I tried a 50/50 verm and peat moss casing but due to not having a pressure cooker I only baked it. Now, I have seen someone have success with a straight verm casing without even sterilizing it which brings me to my question. Is peat moss only added to provide moisture or does it also provide nutrients? Also, do contams breed faster or more easily on peat moss compared to vermiculite?

Peat moss is a bit more acidic than other casing layer admixtures. But I have used pure peat moss before in a pinch and it worked. You really just need to be very clean about it. Mix the peat moss and vermiculite, or the coco coir and vermiculite, so that the mixture is a bit more moist than is desired for the casing. Put this in the microwave and nuke it until it steams. After this your casing will be semi-sterile. In a clean environment apply the casing seal the container and let it colonize for 3-4 days before checking in on it.
Good luck, if you'd like some more information, PM me.

You don't need to sterilize it. You heat it between 160 and 170 degrees. You did it the way you should (if you properly pasterized) So your problem is sterility no matter what. If you had sterilized it, it'd be even more likely to contam actually.
And use a ph buffer if you haven't been. That'll surely help you out.

Just moisture, No nutrients.
A straight verm casing can work just as well. Strait verm mixed with H2O2 water works great. Mix your water, 1 part 3% H2O2 solution with 10 parts water. Tap water works, but bottled spring water is better. Soak your verm in this and apply as your casing. No need to sterilize, cook, heat, nuke etc. just work with clean tools and in a clean area. If you have unused mixed H2O2 water left over, you can put it in a spray bottle and use for misting.

I know it is not necesary, but I want to do it any way. I was thinking about nuking the peat moss/verm, but i prefair doing it in the oven. is the sime procedure? for how long and at what temperature? I have found so many different answers to that.
