Heater questions
    #3375206 - 11/17/04 04:31 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

What do most of you guys use for a heater in your terrariums? What do you usually pay for these and where do you get em? The only place I've seen anything remotely like a heating pad they wanted 40 a pad.

most of us use a submersiable aquarium pump. they rane in price from 10-100$ dollars, idealy one with an external heat probe as it will keep a temp in a chamber, not just the water.

i really dont have to use a heater.... as long as the room is a decent temp to where i am comfortable, there are no problems... in the winter time i use an electic heater, which brings the temp of the room up and makes it comfortable...

Well the only thing is I'm going to be using 6 rubbermaids, stacked in two piles on three. I want to put one heating pad in the middle of each pile to keep it all pretty warm. I found heating pads online, stuff like small electric blankets for around 20 bucks. Those would get it to a good temp, right?

yeah, but regulating the temp is a pain in the ass. 6 stacked terraiums seems to me like they would all grow shrooms to the sides, which is kinda undersiable.

Each has a small fluoro mounted to the lid of the container ... Therefore all mushrooms in a container will grow towards its respective light.

Why don't you just get a Martha? That's going to be a pain in the ass...... to mist, harvest, etc....

Martha is not an option. Complete stealth isn't much of an issue but it can't be obvious either. Solid color rubbermaids are my best option at the moment and I'll be using a coolmist humidifer, one per 3 containers to keep them humid. The only problem would be harvesting but I'll "suffer" through it somehow ... haha

How are you going to hook the containers together? Like tubes running to each one? Remember that the humid air will fall.. so you'll want to have the cool mist feeding the topmost one.

The heating pad idea really won't work very well for this kind of setup.. It will only heat the tub(s) that it is touching. Trust me, I use a heating pad for my Pod.. It is less than desirable, but it works OK for now. I'm still going to make a Tub in Tub eventually though.

I'd recommend a tub in tub.. for each tub.

Yup ... going to have the humidifier placed on the top of the piles and have some rubber hosing running down the side of the stack and drill 3 holes in the tube and one hole in the side of each rubbermaid. I'm going to run a small piece of tubing from each hole to connect the tubing and the rubbermaids. It'll look like a "E" ... a verticle line on the left, with three horizontal lines coming out.

Yeah, the only problem is space or I would do 6 TiTs ... During fruiting temps in the mid 70s are fine so heating pads should be fine I guess, won't get them superhot, but you don't want superhot anyway ... thats my guess anyway, is that right?

6 tub in tubs should only take up a little more room than just 6 tubs.... It would look a little more strange though.

You want them at 76?F. That is going to be very difficult to obtain. The closer the tub is to the heating pad, the closer it will be. The tubs that the heating pad is touching will be much warmer than the ones that aren't.

I bought a 55W heating pad for 3$ at a thrift store. For the first few weeks, I was using Perlite in my Pod. It didn't like the heating pad at all. Since it compacted down so much, it allowed very little if any water circulation. It was only warm in the center of the Pod, where the heating pad was, and even then I had to have it on High to keep the air temperatures correct.

Now that I've switched to geolite, there is much better circulation, and the tub heats more evenly, even though there is still a slight difference between the center and edges. I also had to bump the setting down to Medium Low to keep it from getting up into the 80s. That's why I say heating pads in general are less than desirable, but you can make them work satisfactory. I just can't see it working for more than 1 tub, though.

Well I wouldn't mind buying like 4 ... and having them set up as such:

TUB TUB
PAD PAD
TUB TUB
PAD PAD
TUB TUB

That way every one of the tubs is touched and it'll cost me only 40 dollars. Each tub is a bulk which should produce a QP dry each minimum. 2x3 feet containers with 6" of horsemanure/straw ... Even if I only would get a quarter, at least I'd get what I pay for. But that 40 dollars is gonna be well worth it ...

Hmm.. So each tub is going to be filled directly with mushroom material? I don't know if a heating pad would be very good to use for that... In a traditional Pod, as you know, there is a water and (rock)barrier between the (mushrooms, mycelium) and the heat. If you put a heating pad on the bottom of a bulk bin, the substrate will be heated to much warmer than 76?F.

76 is the ideal fruiting temp?

Nobody said I'd have to have the pads on full blast. Having the pads layered should help to keep the temps pretty uniform throughout the bins. I'm not saying that you're wrong or anything, but I'm just thinking that while this is not PERFECT, I think it'll be good enough and shouldn't hurt my yields too noticibly.
