Haz, no offense, but you can't go around telling people to go to your page for answers.....  :spammer:

Anyway, I'm kinda confused by your question. We are talking about an air pump.... right?

You aren't supposed to feel a rush of air like a fan comming out of the tubes, lol.

The rating on the aquarium air pump has to do with the size of fish tank it can safely run. What you're interested in is the ammount of air it outputs, usually represented in cubic centimeters(cc) per minute.

i'm thinking thats gonna be kinda small. Find the output in LPM or CCPM. someone put out a chart to show you the math..

here's the link

In my opinion, 2-3x per hour is probably pretty overkill. I mean, people that fan manually generally do it 6 times a day max, right? That's every 4 hours.

I do believe that you can never have too much fresh air, so if you're just starting out, by all means.. get a pump that will do 2-3x per hour.

I'm using a 168L/hour pump in a 30 gallon tub(minus a bit for the geolite and water...), which exchanges the air every 0.7 hours.

That sized pump should be plenty fine. Read that huge PMP thread, they talk about air exchange quite a bit, you'll have everything figured out then.

It doesen't matter. It only takes 1 air exchange to completely exchange the air, obviously. It's still 1 complete air exchange every 4 hours. It doesen't matter if there is 20 or 30x the volume of the tub flowing around for 30 seconds, as soon as you stop fanning the air stops moving and you begin counting the time until the next air exchange.

It's not like you can fan for 10 minutes and call it good for the day because you've exchanged the air in the tub 30 times... lol

By this reasoning does it mean i can stick my pump on a timer and only have it going for say an hour every four-six hours:

ie/ 4-6 complete air exchanges per day???

It seems this is right as many people who manually fan only provide about 4-6 fannings per day.

To me this would increase the life of my pump and not waste electricity (I'm environmentally conscious  )

I have my pump on a timer to run for 30 minutes every 2 hours.  Seems to work like a charm  GL bro :stoned:
