My first find!? Help me Id..
    #3375113 - 11/17/04 06:12 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

So I was hiking today and walked passed these beautiful lil things pokin up. They were growing in some dead foresty kind of stuff, leaves and decaying matter and whatnot. I printed them and the print is definitely a little purple toned, brown-black. They never really bruised blue, maybe a lil purple though in spots but i'm not sure. No bruising on the stems any color (they are pretty tough and hard). What do you guys think? Should I eat these guys and celebrate my first wild cube find?

They don't look like cubes to me, but wait for a second opinion.

Do not eat those... I have never picked a wild cube, but those do not appear to be cubies... the consistent spots on the top and the blackish gills, lead me to that, for starters... Although the spore print is deceptive! The cap in your third picture looks nothing like a cubensis that I have seen.

The were found in the lower pacific northwest. The gills are kinda purple grayish, the same color as the spore print. Also the cap in the 3rd pic is from the shroom in the middle of the 1st and 2nd pic.

What makes these not look like cubes? I am new to hunting but they have a goldish cap that comes to a sort of nipple, they have a purple tinged spore print and white-brown stems. Granted they didn't bruise blue/purple (i think the stems were too hard too bruise at all), what else is wrong with em? Help a noob out for next time.

do some research on cubes. have you read this?

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/species.htm

There is a lot of good stuff out there that will help you. A good indication is the bluing. Your looking for this:

This is completely different than what will grow in yoru area but its common to bruise blue in the stem, or around the outer part of the cap. Its unmistakeable. You really should be looking for these charactaristics if your looking for anything active. Here is a link to what may grow in your area:

give up on hunting cubes they dont grow in your area. Research some other actves in your area. Also the hardness of the stems doesnt matter with cubes they will allways bruise blue.

Certainly in the strophariaceae family; to narrow it down further will require knowing whether the cap is viscid. (Arora's key)

Psilocybe is a possibility, but P. cubensis is ruled out by habitat, location, and the lack of an annulus.

Even if it is a Psilocybe, the lack of bluing reaction points toward inactivity.

If I had to guess I would agree with Evan: probably Strofaria.
