You do realise that this is primarily a single player game? Holy Shit!

I conscientiously object to and cannot support this misbehavior no matter how much I wanted to buy this game! :mad2:

Day of Defeat: Source and Counterstrike: Source are the multiplayer components of HL2. Both of these mods were WAY more popular online than the original HL multiplayer ever was, so I think they just decided to put all their multiplayer effort into them.

Besides, you don't play the Half Life series for multiplayer...you play it for a KILLER plotline and phenomenal physics engine (at least with HL2).

HL2 is awsome beyond belief you definitly should buy it. while half life 2 is only single player it is awsome and i have been playing it since it came out constantly. i spent probably the first 8 hours just picking shit up and throwing it at people, out windows, balancing it on cars, etc... CS:S is sick as well, the physics engine is so awsome i will never be able to get over it. while HL2 is single player CS:S isn't that expensive and it is the same game just with other people and obviously in the CS format.

then why the fuck do i need an internet connection to play it? and after your through explaining that one tell me why Valve, who had a clear idea of how well Doom3 did and how many preorders they had themselves, did not invest in a sufficient server farm for Steam to insure people didn't have to wait for HOURS to play a SINGLE PLAYER GAME.

Graphics and gameplay be damned, no i shouldn't "definitely buy it". I'll place my money with the next killer game produced by a shop that doesn't automatically assume me to be a criminal and consider it ok to inconvenience paying customers while the "criminals" they seek to stop enjoy less inconveneice than I.

The product needs to be activated. It should only access the internet once, when your installing. I'm sure someone will find a way to get around that soon.

incorrect

the game checks online for key validity on each load.

if i wanted to crack it so it doesn't do that then i'd just download the warez and forget paying valve. as it is, i'll just forego the game entirely. i've also contacted Valve customer support and let them know my position.

This is one of the things that's stopped me buying so far. I want some kind of guarantee that I can still play the game 5 years from now even if Valve (and Steam) have gone belly-up. Also the last time I tried Steam (when CS 1.6 required it to play) it fucked up my entire HL installation and I had to wipe and re-install.

I support the idea of being able to download a game directly from the people who made it but I don't like being made to jump through these absurd hoops to play it.

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

Steam has come a long way since then. It was absolutely HORRID when it first came out, but we all bitched at Valve enough that they seem to have fixed it up nicely. I hardly EVER have any problems playing games on Steam these days.

I don't have many problems on Steam these days either. But I have to disagree with you guys. The best reason to buy HL2 is the mod community, or at least when they start putting stuff out there. I've heard that HL2 maps can be 16x larger than HL! I can't wait to see all the realistic military mods that are planned for it. Imagine, sniper rifles will actually be used at appropriate ranges now!

In all honesty, HL2 seems a little scripted; however, it's the best FPS I've ever played.
