problems w/perilite-lined growth chamber?
    #3373235 - 11/17/04 11:12 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

i'm using a black rubbermade container with perilite along the bottom for my growth chamber. I have some beautiful shrooms coming up out of the cakes, but a problem i've noticed is that they are growing <downward> rather than up toward the light. I assume the reason for this is that the white perilite is reflecting the light coming from the top of the container and the shrooms are being attracted to that. not all of them are pointing downward, but my biggest one, about 7 inches long, is just snaking along the bottom of the chamber following the perilite. anyone else have this problem? any solutions? thanks.

I used perlite for my PmP once. Since then Ive traded it in for lava rocks, which dont clog my bubble wands and are alot cleaner. I guess since they are darker colored it may work better for what your talking about too, assuming thats your problem.

What kinda light source ya got? is it comin through a transluscent lid, or is it mounted to it?

i've got the light coming through a translucent lid, just sitting beneath a window. i'm not too high-tech....its just a box with perilite lining the bottom and cakes on top of that. working beautifully, though.

Its made by Hoffman, you can get it at home depot, something like 2 bucks for 2 quarts. In my 80 gallon container I used about 6 of em. So it can be a lil pricey, but since you can bake em and reuse them and they arent messy Id pay the price any day.

Now one thing to remember is that when buying lava rocks from, say like walmart, you dont want the kind for grills. They are usually much bigger peices and sometimes covered with flamable chemicals, which most likely arent too good for your substrates.

If you get it for lawn and garden uses, its great. Just as good as geolite and hydroton.

Hoffmans is my brand like I said, but im sure theres lots of other kinds also sold all over.

Hope that helps a lil

I think your problem is more to do with the lid your usin. Thats alot of surface area and exposure for light to get in. Id say picking up an opaque lid and cutting out a window with plexi glass replaced would give you a much more direct light source and a little incentive to grow the right way.

Im probably wrong, but if they want to know which way is up, I say show em.

i like that idea....maybe duct-tape alot of the top so that i cut down on the surface area of light coming in? thanks for the idea. if you can't duct it, fuck it!
