Simple answer: Lots of different things.
There is not a single 'insurgency' movement. You have Baathists, assorted religious fanatics (which will never agree on what they want even between themselves), foreign governments interfering and plain old criminals stealing/extorting as much as they can can.

Sounds like a sensible analysis. There is probably a section made up of people simply grieved at loosing their families and towns to US bombs too. - Perhaps thay end up entering one of the categories psilo defined above as a means of surviving, finding strength and networking; and as a symptom of dealing with their pain. Perhaps they don't need further definition.

Yeah, I am sure I left loads of groups out including nationalists, tribal powers (Sunni/Shia/Kurd and loads of sub-groups), assorted warlords and maybe even a popular resistance too.

For the first and probably the last time, I agree with you.

I think very few people are in any kind of position to answer this question. Very few Americans at least.
The US military's achilles heal has always been its arrogance in assuming the motives of people halfway across the world. The proper thing to do is to not worry about it.
The absolute worst thing to do is go on televison and say asinine things like 'they hate freedom.'

What would be better for the people of iraq...
A.) U.S stays until the insurgency is defeated, elections are held, and iraqi soldiers can protect their country.
B.) Prolonging the insurgency, in effect stifling the above.
C.) Leave and watch the country go into a probable civil war.
D.) Fill in with what you want.
This question is not about whether it was right/wrong to invade iraqi, it is about the situation that needs to be dealt with. Reality.

It's not your position to invade a Muslim country. You all hate us ragheads anyway, so stop pretending you're concerned about what the Iraqi people think.
The Prophet Muhammad commanded Muslims to wage armed struggle against any kaffir that enters a Muslim land with force.

Can you answer my question again? Or is your response, "because allah says so"

My god, what an arrogant way of going about things.. "Well, you have religious beliefs so you are automatically wrong."... Alot of people have religious beliefs. In fact, most of the planet does.

D - Muslims fight the American occupation until they finally leave - be it next year, or in 7 years. If any munafiqs try to control the country un-Islamically, then they will be destroyed.
