Can WBS be boiled?
    #3372276 - 11/17/04 12:12 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Can Wild bird seed be boiled/steam or does it require a PC?

Also...what are all the different things that can be sterilized by boiling? I just dont have money for a PC at this point and I dont like how BRF cakes colonize so slow so im looking for an alternative until I can afford a PC.

Thanks.

So is BRF the only thing that can be boiled??

Are the risks of boil-sterilizing WBS the same as BRF?? I boiled my last 2 BRF grows and none got contams. Ide like to do the same with WBS.

More replys please!

there are endospores in WBS and grains that cannot be killed at 212 degree's. the same is not true of BRF. hence you can boil BRF and not grains

If you boil WBS you will get contams.

I tryed it with my first 3 Quart jars of WBS, boiled for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and all 3 were fine. The seed was also un-soaked I believe, just simmered.

Depends on what kind of contaminants the WBS you procure is.. contaminated with.

Generally, it won't work. But that doesen't mean it can't.

Try some jars full of this mix:

4 parts manure/composted manure
2 parts straw
1 part verm
1 part BRF

That should make for a nice lil mix and shouldn't require any PC.

i've seen microwaved rye work before, so anything's possible. just expect a shitload of contams on the road to success.
