Soaking rye
    #3371461 - 11/16/04 11:12 PM (12 years, 27 days ago)

Is it bad to leave rye soaking longer than 24hrs? Would they still be usable after say, ~36hrs ??

yes its bad because the rye starts to germinate (sprouting) you don't want this. I dont even suggest 24 hours of soaking. I soak for about 12 hours.

I have read again and again that if the rye itself starts to germinate then it is problematic. I was just wondering why this is so? Say you were to use rye that has started germinating and simmered PC'd etc, what would be the problem after inoc?

I'm new to this and just started a few jars, soaking rye the other day. I ended up leaving them in their for longer than 12 hours and they began to sprout. I'm not exactly sure, derx would now this answer, but I believe that if it began to germinate that if you simmered/PCed/etc that after inoc it would conflict with the newly growing rye.

It will contam, thats the problem. You can use barely germinated kernels but not fully germinated ones, better to just throw them out now than have to throw them out in a week after wasting spores on them. Also make sure to submerge the rye, it germinates more readily if exposed to the air... mine won't even make it 12 hours unless its submerged.

Rye or WBS sprouts is like vegetables. They cook, release fluids, starches, other what-not & get mushy. That tends make a spawn jar / bag clump up pretty solid. Which isn't a good thing, as you are looking for as many individual fully colonized grains as possible for colonization to spread out from.

Moreover, if you have cooked veggy like stuff spread out in a substrate - at spawning time - you have a lot exposed readily available carbohydrates that contaminates (tric - especialy)flourish on, if they can get to them.

Intact fully colonized grain/wbs doesn't expose that to contaminates.

I soaked wheat in a 1% bleach solution for a week, you could see the beginnings of germination but they never sprouted, I figure they were killed off by the bleach. I still have to inoculate them.
If you microwave dry grain it gets to very high temps pretty quickly, this may be enough to make the grain unable to germinate and then you could soak for days. I am not sure if heating does stop it being able to germinate

Remember the warmer you keep it when soaking the faster it will germinate.
