Rockwool
    #337051 - 06/07/01 12:00 PM (23 years, 7 months ago)

any thoughts on rockwool for use in casing? i did a search for "rockwool" , all i found was a short discussion, and that was a long time ago...

Rockwool is ph nuetral, so you can use ph up and down to set it at exactly what ph level you want, its also got great water retention, and its porous so i think the mycelia will grow through it pretty damn good...

any thoughts? i think im gonna shred a few of my rockwool cubes and make a casing with them instead of vermiculite... criticism is welcome

It has been a long time since my friend has grown plants, but from what she can remember, rockwool is very acidic (usually has a ph of 4.5) and has to be boiled for several hours and ph balanced before use (at least for growing plants). For more information on rockwool, read up on hyrdoponics and indoor cannabis cultivation.

i think you have it the other way around. the rockwool i use is basic, and without ph downing it, your plants will die...

like miles said:

pH PROBLEMS - Rockwool has a high pH which means you have to adjust your nutrient solution low so that the root zone is neutral. Rockwool is also susceptible to pH shifts meaning a bit more routine maintenance to keep the pH levels correct.

all you would have to do is set a tub of water to the desired ph level and soak the rockwool in it for 24 hours.... i do this all the time when working with my hydroponic systems....
