1st time grow, how do these cakes look?
    #3370352 - 11/16/04 08:05 PM (12 years, 26 days ago)

These cakes were done through the pf tek method. They were refrigerated after not pinning in their casings, and put in here about 5 days ago. Some white growth is appearing in the tops of the cakes, but is not spiderweb like. any help is appriciated. also, what amounts of water and light should they be getting?

Did you put verm on top, or are they not fully colonized or.. other?

possibly not fully colonized. we didnt put any vermiculite on top, but theyd been colonizing for about a month, and were advised to birth the cakes at that point.

Uhh... You should never birth the cakes if they aren't fully colonized..

A couple of those are a little concerning, but good luck......

Were total rookies. Theres no humidifying element in the terrarium, only 4-5 spray downs a day. Were also operating in a dorm room which limits some of our capabilities. We never dunked before the first flush, is that necessary? also, how important is it that the terrarium is completely air tight?

ur grow isnt going to work.

u need humidity for cakes. not even perlite alone really works.

try dunking and then crumbling those suckers, then take a gallon milk carton, and throw sum dry verm down, then a pints worth of substrate, then sum wet verm. be sure to have many valleys/hills int he surface of the casing.

put that in a tub with sum perlite on the bottom and maybe a night light from an extension chrd, and ull hav sum NNIIICEEE mushies.

and if u only use verm, u probably wont get any contams.

also, if whoever made the post saying they wont grow under their current condition, how is the pf tek's advice possible? even if its not the best method, they dont mention having a humidifier at all, just cakes in a "loosely sealed" bin and theyre good to go apparently.

You should just try to make a small PMP. You can make it really stealth. "You just set it and forget it!" Totally dorm room safe and works like a charm.

If you are using only perlite i'd suggest dunking & rolling the cakes. I was having no so good results before I started rolling my cakes. Of course you could always just do casings, that should solve the humidity problem as well.
