Best method to quit smoking
    #3370139 - 11/16/04 05:32 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

There are so many things on the market today, patches, pills, inhalers.

What if anything has worked for you?

Regular excersize. If your out running every morning, it gives you a big incentive to put down the squares.

Making up your mind

But no, seriously, the "addiction" is all in your mind. Physical addiction barely lasts 48 hours with nicotine...it's all in your head.

For me, it was the realization that I was fooling myself by calling it an "addiction". To say you are addicted is to admit you don't have free-will anymore. It is admitting you are a slave. I realized this and said "ok, no more!". I had over half a pack left, but I crumpled it beyond smoke-ability and watched it fall into the trash.

I've had a cig or two since (over a year now!) but I can't finish a whole one without feeling nauseous. So I think I'm quit for good, this time

The only people I have seen that quit were people that of their own
accord came to the conclusion that smoking was disgusting and they
really really wanted to stop.

Everybody I know who tried the gum, patch, little computers, pills,
etc... It didn't work. The only thing that seems to work is
human will.

Exactly. Substituting one addiction for another doesn't solve anything. Attack the root of the problem, decide you don't want to be addicted anymore. Don't just toy with the idea, make a choice.

After all, choice is all we really have :smirk:

I've quit twice with the patch. It takes care of the physical addiction and while you're on it you just gotta replace the mouth fixation thing with gum or something like that. It really wasn't hard at all. I didn't crave a cigarette because I knew I'd feel sick if I smoked one. I didn't cheat or feel the need to cheat while on the patch. After 4 or 5 weeks on the patch it was easy to go off the patch completely because at that point you're only getting a small amount of nicotine each day. The first time I quit for a year then the second time I did for 6 months. Why did I go back? Well shitty things happened both times and with my lifestyle everyone around me smokes. I almost desired to have that addiction back to use as a crutch. I felt like I could have one here and there but before I knew it I was addicted again. Next time I quit I will use the patch because I've had good luck with it but I have to keep in mind that under no circumstances can I have even one cigarette ever again. A lot of people here may tell you to bight the bullet and just quit cold turkey. But I really believe the patch is a good tool. You just have to have the total desire to quit from the point you start the treatment until the day you die.

I agree with the thought that "will-power" is the only true way to quit smoking... but I found using licorice roots was a great help. Whenever I felt a craving for a smoke, I would take a piece of licorice root, and "smoke" it... not only did it taste really damn good, but it helped to calm the craving, and get my mind off of wanting to have a smoke. you can buy them at probably any health-food store - and i think it's a good way to ease off the addiction to the action of smoking (sort-of like those nicotrol inhalers, except without the nicotine).

i've been quit now for nearly 2 months.... although I do have maybe 1 cigarette a week (when really drunk), I haven't had to deal with any "cravings" for quite some time... (or, really thats a lie - i have cravings - but they are easy enough to put aside and forget about - it's like i have the thought "well i could have a cigarette" but it seems about as reasonable as the thought "well i could go on a murderous rampage")

I used sex and booze.
I quit cold turkey and whenever I was getting tense my good friend(now wife)would make me very VERY happy and then I'd get really drunk.
When I woke up I started drinking again until I passed out again.
Anyway long story short I had a great time and can't remember about a week of my life....and I haven't smoked for about 5 years.
I was a pack a day and I'd rip the filters off and smoke them backwards when I was stressed.
Now if only I could stop drinking.
You may think I'm joking but it's really true.
It's how I quit.

its an SSRI that has a neato keen effect at blocking the brains reward synapse for nicotine, as well as helping 'replace' the fiending. Its marketed as a quit smoking aid under the name zyban, but is really just wellbutrien SR 150MG tablets.

my mother a smoker of about 25 years, 2 to 3 packs a day, quit with it. I used it a few years ago and quit for about 9 months before some bad things happened in my life and I caved in and started again.

Insurance will usually not cover it if you go in to a doc and say 'I want to quit smokjing, give me wellbutrien'

The way to get it is to go in, say you are depressed and wantt o get back on wellbutrien because it worked.

or just pay out ofpocket for the zyban.

Host: I've heard whispers about the financial support your government receives from the drug industry.
Peruvian: Well, the irony of this, of course, is that this money, which is in the billions, is coming from your country. You see, you are the major purchaser of our national product, which is of course cocaine.
Host: On one hand, you're saying the United States government is spending millions of dollars to eliminate the flow of drugs onto our streets. At the same time, we are doing business with the very same goverment that is flooding our streets with cocaine.
Peruvian: Mmm-hmm, si, si. Let me show you a few other characters that are involved in this tragic comedy.

i smoked a pack a day, sometimes even more for about 5 years.. i quit cold turkey...i bought a bag of blowpops and ate one every time i had a craving...it also took a hell of a lot of will power...will power is really the key...also another tip DONT have any cigartettes, when you quit you are DONE.. cutting back doesnt work , limiting yourself doesnt work and just having one doesnt work....its just like any addiction once you quit you can NEVER go back...after about 3 months i didnt even think about smoking anymore
