Scabs indicate healing of previous damage. Rot should look like rot. In general, these babies are incredibly resilient, so you needn't worry about "losing the whole lot" if you wait too long....you should always be able to cut them off above any diseased tissue and reroot them....

My advice is ease off on the watering (especially this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, make sure they're planted only a couple of inches in, and layer the top with gravel or the like....

If it is rotting then it was proabably given to much water. i had a few cacti rot through because I fe them too much water.

A san pedro can liove for several years without even beng planted.

If you think you might lose the bottom stop watering. If you'd like to take a cutting clean a sharp knife with isoproply alcahol and give it the chop leaving at least 3" on the base. Let the cut calus over for about 4-6 weeks then plant that in moist potting soil with extra pearlite. Mushmush.com has pictorials and other cacti meathods so check them out before you ask any more q's.
