to tamp or not to tamp

The PF-tek has a section on 'tamping', whereing you pour your substrate to the top but then hit it on a hard surface to bring the level down, filling the remaining area w/ dry vermiculite. I've seen a lot of people writing about cakes being too tightly packed. So the question is, should noobs follow this suggestion from PF to 'tamp'?

Fluff it up, make it loose and still cover with verm.

I 'tamped' my first batch (doh). Does this have any effect other than slowing down colonization time, thereby increasing chance of contams? I.e., does it decrease yields. My amateurish logic would think that if you can get past contams during colonization, you're somewhat better off b/c you've now got more nutes.

your right, i dont belive its going to help your yeild in any way, besides helping out on later flushes but yeah once you get past the slow colonization time your all good to go, but its much easier on your supplies and also the colonization time if you just litely pack the jars, i dont even pack i scoop some into the jar with a spoon till i get to the threads then i clean the top and put dry verm in.
