surface area/volume

Does anybody use small substrate depths such as 1 inch? I have estimated about 105 cubic inches of fully colonized substrate. I bought these glad ovenware dishes that are 9x12 inches. This would lead me with .97 inches of substrate depth. What do you'll think? I'm using rye berries, going to case with 50/50 peat/verm + oystershells + lime. Should the casing layer be only 1/4 inch thick if I do this?

I'd go with a 1/2", TMC says that the bigger flush you want, the bigger the casing layer should be. I'd go with the biggest that you can get away with. In reference to a 4" substrate layer he says that the maximum should be 2".

used those exact same gladware trays myself, i think. try at least 1/2 in for your casing but they work pretty well for the 1st fluch, 2nd ain't so hot though...but I used straw and cased that....

Try to keep it between 1-2 inches.
