some tips for everyone
    #336632 - 06/06/01 10:43 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

i have been cutting and pasting stuff that i have seen on the msg boards that i thought sounded useful i have not written any of these and dont be suprised if you did i have just been doing this for personal amusement and thought i would share:
Agar culture helps establish a pure
Culture. A pure culture is the best way to establish
uniformity. Multispore germination is great to. A pure culture
of a good strain is what you need to do actual liquid culture, holographic.
If you just put spores in water, or honey, the resultant liquid is going
to have several strains growing, therefore it will be less uniform upon
growing out to the mushroom stage. Most if not all Mushroom farms, not
spore vendors, but commercial mushroom farms use pure cultures of known
productive quality. When your livelyhood depends on getting uniform
harvests, of uniform mushrooms, in a set time frame, under certain
environmental parameters, it is an absolute must. If you just want to
produce some shrooms mannnnnnnn, do what ever you want. But to argue
that multispore germinations are equal to the use of a pure strain of
known quality, is rediculous. Everyone in the legal shroom industry starts
with a pure culture for spawn production, their livelyhood depends on this.
Yield is better, and uncertainty is removed from the equation.

As far as the PF tek goes, I wouldn't use
Agar to inoculate, because you can't shake the
Jars to distribute. If you transferred your pure strain
To liquid and then inoculated with the liquid,
It would work great.

I always use 1/2 cup verm 1/4 cup of BRF and
45 cc's of springwater and I always have
Fat fruitings and get 5 flushes.

When you all pasteurize straw do you pack it in to the pot?
I had mine in a pillowcase and had to really mash it to get to
All fit nicely with a weight on top. And when you all pasteurize
Does the water get yellow/brown?
Yes, it can be packed down. This helps alittle in
Crushing the stems more as well. Yes to the yellow/brown water to
. It gets this way from the releasing of nutrients from the straw.
This liquid is very good to mix with birdseed when you're cooking it also.

These shrooms we grow are a very tolerant and forgiving species.
This doesn't give us permission to just wing it.

. Strive for a growing temperature between 65 and the upper 80's.
A too hot terrarium will result in lots of spreading mycelium,
But no fruiting.

I use the following
1.5g bacto-agar (basically just agar with no other nutrients)
1.5g malt extract (available at brew shops; the lighter the color the better)
100ml water
Autoclave at 15psi for 45min
Enough for 5-6 petri plates

A long time ago when my friend first started out, she used plain brown rice and water as a substrate. The problem with it is that the rice either gets tooo wet or to dry while pressure-cooking. So here is a much better way with very consistent results. Mycelium does extremely well with it.
2 1/2 cups Whole brown Rice
2 cups of distilled water
2 cups of plain vermiculite
Take a large pot and pour in the whole brown rice and water.
Cook until rice soaks up all the water~15 minutes or so.
Cut heat off and let the pot sit for about 10 minutes
Mix in the vermiculite really good
fill pint jars half full DONT pack it in
There ya go.:)

Take Wheat Straw and put it in an old pillowcase.
Put in large pot and pasturize for about an hour
Let cool and drain on rack above sink
Then take a dark colored pan about the size of a large shoebox and sprinkle a thin layer of dry plain vermiculite on the bottom.
Then take a handful of straw from the pillowcase and cut it in two inch sections as you hold it over the pan, letting the cut pieces fall in the pan.
Once the bottom is covered (about an inch), Take a cake and start breaking small pieces off and scattering them about on top of te 1st layer.
Add another layer of chopped straw
Then another sprinkling of cake pieces.
Repeat these steps until you either run out of cake pieces or are at a depth of about 6-8 inches.
*Make sure the top layer is straw not cake pieces and straw mixed*
Cover with a piece of plastic tarp with holes (air exchange)
Put in dark place for about 5 days, or until the top layer gets covered with 80-90% white growth.
Take the plastic cover off and sprinkle a thin layer(doesnt even have to cover completely) damp vermiculite that has been microwaved for five minutes and let cool.
Place in a growing chamber with about 2-4 inches damp perlite(water/H2O2 mixed then drained off).
Put in a place lit by light of some sort.
Keep humidity at about 100%
Temps can vary tremendously
When you start seeing pinns, fan a litle each day ( dont over do it or you will dry out top layer resulting in side growth)
This should help with anyone wanting to experiment. My friend said it works very good

Forget the vermiculite... it will just take up space. Add 250ML birdseed and 130ML water into a quart jar and sterilize for 70Min. @15 P.S.I.
