?s this contam or normal for mexicana on rice?

The white areas of rice to the left and right of the yellow-brown part are uncolonized yet. So there's no mycelium there. But on the top, which cant be seen here, the mycelium is white. I have 3 more jars like this but this is the only one with a color like this yet. I dont know if it is contam, because all mexicana pics I have seen had mycelium color like this, but usually when producing sclerotia. Can anyone help??

Looks good to me (although I have never grown it on rice). Mexicana mycelium can have a broad spectrum of colors. What you actually see is either the color of the mycelium, or the color change exhibited by the semi-digested substrate. That definetly looks like mexicana mycelium I have grown on agar...
It does look perfectly normal from your picture. Typically the mycelium will have an off-white to tan color...

yeah but on agar it was white for weeks. it never got off white or tan.thats what I dont understand. the agar wedge has been in there for 5 days or so and the color already changed. But if it is because of rice..dunno..maybe That would mean the other 2 jars should start changing color as well soon.

Personally I wouldn't be too concerned with it at this point. Since you have grown it on agar yourself, you should be able to distinguish it from any type of contaminant. If it looks like the mycelium other than the color change, then you should be fine. It definetly looks like a typical mexicana coloration to me. If it slows down or stops growing, then I would worry...

Just looks like it's taking a lil extra time to colonize your substrate, which look like whole grain rice, correct? I wouldn't be worried at all, but just as a tip, make sure you let your jar colonize for a week extra after it looks like it's 100% colonized. I've done whole rice jars before successfully in the past, but one problem I noticed is that it takes the mycelium extra time to digest the rice and colonize the cake on the inside, especially if you packed the jar tight, or if the rice is a lil on the dry side. Just have some extra paitence.

Looks great. Mecicana likes to pee a lot as it digests substrate, and it can come in a variety of colors.

I wouldnt die in my own pee. But I pee lots of nutrients so its hard to say.
