Oxytetracycline HCL

I want to experiment using antibiotics in agar,it just so happens that I have quite a bit of Oxytetracycline HCL left over from my Y2K supplies. I know that some antibiotics, like amoxicillin are heat sensitive and have to be added after pc'ing...what about tetracycline?

This will be damaged also (I think), because in our lab we cold sterilize the antibiotic (push through a filter) and put it in the agar jar after sterilisation. Be very carefull with oxytetracyclyne it's very heavy shit.

Why are you using antibiotics, you can't tell if there are bacteria present because they don't grow! So you son't know if your agar is contaminated!
btw maybe a stupid question, Y2K (I always see this related 2 ganja) what does Y2K mean????

definately add oxytet after autoclaving/pressure cooking, it, like most antibiotics, is heat sensitive.
paddoholland has a point in that some antibiotics inhibit growth but don't entirely kill all bacteria that are present and so in liquid culture with which you intend to innoculate solid substrate it could be a waste of substrate if it turns out you had contamination but i think that this scenario would be unlikely, and for agar propogation it is a good idea to include antibiotics especially if you are using this technique to store/perpetuate cultures as they will be around and potentially exposed to infection for long periods of time

assuming that you're from holland or elsewhere abroad you are fortunate not to have been innundated with this catch phrase that has been so overused that the mere sounding of its syllables invokes painful annoyance.

Thanks for the info. I do keep cultures in the fridge in agar,so maybe I'll include antibiotics. The year 2000 (Y2k) was supposed to bring with it massive computer crashes, etc, etc.
and so on.

hmmm year 2 thousand. thanks
I really don't believe your antibiotics will kill all contams on agar. I suppose if you seal your dishes with foil they won't get contaminated.

tetracycline will KILL almost all bacteria but wont do much to fungal contams which are the real problemo hear.
