Terrarium height question...
    #3365822 - 11/15/04 08:53 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I was planning on doing a bulk grow using rubbermaid containers, roughly 2x3 feet in dimension but I'm not sure about the height of the containers. I want to do an inch of perilite on the bottom with 6" of horse manure/straw and fasten a small fluoro to the lid of the container. I'm going to do 6 of these tubs, and I'm going to stack them on top of each other. I plan to have 2 cool mist humidifiers, each one being fed into 3 of the rubbermaids. Because I'll be stacking them into 2 piles of 3, I don't want the height of each to be fairly low. What would you recommend for a height that will keep the stacks low yet give the shrooms enough room to grow. I'll probably be using Golden Teachers in 3 of the 6 and then either treasure coast or gulf coast in the other 3. Thanks.

6-10" above your substrate should be fine.

6" deep sub, eh? Hm. Probably a foot above your substrate. I presume you're going to put a rack on top of the perlite and the casing trays on top of that, so that might add an extra inch.

So all in all you're probably looking at 18" - 20" tall 'maids.

60" is only 4 feet, anyway.

Yeah but anything over 4 feet is hard to keep stealth, well, I wouldn't even say stealth ... but more of, completely obvious. I'm not putting a rack or anything on top of the perlite, just perlite and then 6" of substrate. The perilite is only there to give about an inch of a buffer zone between the substrate and the bottom of the container so excess water has a place to sit without soaking the substrate.

Also, just to clarify, there will be no casings, each rubbermaid is like one big casing that works as a terrarium as well.

Have you bought your tubs yet? I don't know where everyone on here gets their 30+ gal tubs for like $3 or whatever they say they are, but around here each terrarium sized tub is $10+. Your best solution is either to buy a martha or to make one. You can make one by gettin some of those PVC shelves from Home Depot or Lowes and then getting some painter's plastic and create your tent around it. Use a hot glue gun to seal the corners and velcro to give yourself a little door. Then you only have to hook your cool mist and your humidifier up to one thing. That's probably your best cost vs. space vs. yield option.

I'd love to do that but it's not an option. I have company over frequently and can't have this too obvious. The rubbermaids won't look suspicious when they're in the basement surrounded by all sorts of other rubbermaids and bags of junk ... And the tubs aernt 3 bucks in my area, more like 7 a piece.

Well, why don't you just build 6 x PMP's?

PS - I hate how they're called the "poor man's pod." It makes them sound inferior when in actuality they kick serious ass. Those things are completely self sufficient and you would have only a small protrusive device coming out of your tubs.

Yeah I could do that. I'd probably get pretty similiar results either way. I don't think expecting 6-10 ounces per container after about a month of flushing is totally unrealistic, do you?

I think with a bulk substrate that is a good approximation, I'd actually like to hear what a seasoned grow thinks of it?
