Was there ever any proof to how much light would be beneficial to growth?

I know growing mushies need at least some light to trigger pinning. I've been checking my cakes about every twelve hours and have noticed that they seem to only really grow at night. They are getting about 12 hrs of natural sunlight and I check them at 10pm/am. This is my first grow so I have nothing to compare this to. I was wondering if there was any proof to what I seem to be seeing. Could I actually help growth out by only giving them a few hours of light a day?

12/12 for pin formation then 18/6 for growth...

Yes, after pinning. To start, you need to give them at least 12/12 but after pin formation you can kick it down to 16/8,18/6, something like that. I read somewhere once about a study that showed that mushrooms actually grow more/faster in the dark.

From what I've read they only really need a lot of light for pin formation and then they need a very negligible amount, as in not even 6 hours a day.

6/18 for fruiting after pinning seems to make them a 'lil fatter to me. 12/12 at all times works pretty damn well though.
i've noticed they seem to grow more in the dark.

Can you leave the light on 24 hours a day? I don't see how it could hurt, eh?

no, you can't. mushrooms need a light/dark cycle. they're not plants where more light is better.
this is covered in the basic teks and faqs on the website. why don't you go look around and read up a bit? (not trying to be an asshole, just a suggestion here.)

Well I knew a little about light affecting mushroom growth before I made that post. I know that they need to be in complete darkness prior to pinning and that they need a decent amount of light to initiate pinning, although it must be very dim light, or it may hurt the shrooms. What the FAQ does not say however is that too many hours of light would hurt, only that too high of an intensity will hurt. If one use a low watt fluoro for 24 hours begining at the start of pinning all the way through harvest, would that work? The reason I ask is because I'll probably be leaving the mushrooms unattended for a couple days at a time with a cool mist humidifier hooked up to keep humidity constantly high and to circulate the air at least once every couple hours.

The bulk neglect grow log found that you can get giant shrooms with only a few minutes of light a day and infrequent misting. I think more light may equal a better, more numerous pinset when put into fruiting INTIALLY, but once you've got that set, it seems it really doesn't matter how much light a day you give them, as long as it gets some on a regular basis. They may indeed grow better in the dark, but I doubt more hurts them either.
24 hours though, seems like overkill. It might even delay the second pinset, because that on/off cycle makes them go through different stages of development, without the dark cycle something COULD go awry. But I bet many people do that with success.

Sure you can. It won't hurt anything, other than perhaps yields.

How signicantly will yield be affected if left on for 24 hours a day? And as far as a second pinset, every few days I could turn the light off for 12 hours or so. So I could have something like a 72/12 cycle ... Idk ... I'm just not totally sure I'll be able to see my mushies everyday, which is why I'm trying to automate my grow, I suppose I could buy a timer tho, huh?

I really don't know. I think Sam is doing some experiments with lightcycle, but with the less light end of things, not more.
IMO, a timer would be a good investment.

I don't see why not but you'll probably need a few of them.
