To cover holes in jar lid or not?
    #3363865 - 11/15/04 02:17 PM (12 years, 25 days ago)

I understand that high C02 concentration is needed to keep the jars in vegetative growth mode. However, i have also heard that too much can slow or stop growth. Right now, i have some PF tek jars that are colonizing very slowly. I left masking tape over the inoculation holes while they are incubating. Would it be wise to remove this tape to allow for air transfer? Would it really make any difference? I've searched a bit, but there seem to be many opinions on this. Some suggest tinfoil, it keeps out Contams but allows for some air transfer. Suggestions?

Thanks!

You take the tape off after inoculation

You don't need to worry about covering the holes for contams either. If you put dry vermiculite on top of your substrate that will do the job.

Tape = Bad
Tinfoil = Good
Tyvek = Best
Tyvek + Tinfoil = Bestest

:wink:

What I've seen recommended on these forums as to what to use for jar covers is tyvek (USPS tyvek envelopes work well). You can inoculate straight through the tyvek and then use a small bandaid (which comes sterile) to cover the inoculation wound on the tyvek.

discman hit the nail right on the head.

tyvek - usually express mail envelopes.

Would I be correct then in stating that during incubation, tape over the holes is fine? I'm not sure whether discman is referring to conditions during fruiting or incubation. I was assuming during fruiting.

There are other options

I use coffee filters much easier than tyvek to work with and seem to do the job lol.
