Worthless items that are priceless to you?

A recent thread got me thinking about what it is that I collect and why I collect it. I realized that the things I collect are of absolutely no value or interest to anyone but me. And it will always be that way.

I think it started 10 years ago when I saw the movie "With Honors". Joe Pesci plays a homeless guy and he talks about collecting 'memories'. He has a bag of rocks and each rock represents an event in his life.

This inspired me to do something similar. Now, a decade into my collection I look at this bucket full of "junk" and memories of places/times in my life come flooding back. But if I threw this stuff out on the ground in front of your house you would sweep it up and throw it in the trash without giving it a second thought.

Here is a sample of some of my 'memories':



Some of the items included above are rocks from the top of Mt. Whitney, rocks from inside the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Repository, and some of the oldest rocks to be found on the suface of the earth (vishnu schist from the bottom of the Grand Canyon...almost 4 billion years old). Also; iron pellets from an old mill at a 19th century gold mine, volcanis glass, twisted peice of a historic plane wreck, minerals, mining core samples, fossils, raw glass, antique wire from a historic site, and other various things.

These thing have absolutely no value or meaning to anyone but me. But to me they are priceless. And someday when I die someone will find this bucket full of 'junk' and toss it in the trash. But thats OK, because all those memories will have died with me and these things will truly become the junk that they are.

Not really priceless but here's the ball I got a hole in one with on a 195 yard par 3. For those who don't know, golf is one of my true passions.

i have a shell i found on a beach, the most romantic summer ive ever had, has mine and a girls initails written on the inside...

i probably have more in boxes.. of "worthless/priceless" items...

now i feel like digging them up and remembering :smile:

:lol:  that is a bitchin shoe!  very odd, but cool.

i collect rocks too, if i can carry them.  any other misc things that look cool while hiking/travelling.  i liek collecting bones too.  kinda morbid but i like teh look of skulls and antlers.

and dried gourds...got a few of them.
