sodium hypochlorate
    #336219 - 06/06/01 01:55 PM (23 years, 11 months ago)

on the last 8 jars i've done (only a few days before i put them to fruit) I let them soak for a couple of hours in dilute sodium hypochlorate, rinsed them off with tap water and then did the sterilisation thing. To date i have no contamination in any of the eight jars.

Does any one else use sodium hypochlorate as a cleaning solution and if so, have you had the same sort of growth success?

Never done this, but as I havent had that much problems with contams. If jars are sterilised properly, meaning the core has to be at 121?C for 15 minutes, the chance of contaminated substrate is out of the question. Than only working not sterile enough while innoculating will cause contams. If this is done in a glove box/under a flowhood/somewhere with little airmovement/next to a flame etc. than you can be pretty sure no contams have entered your jars.
If not nescessary why doing something that takes more time?
