Growing in other things besides jars
    #3361878 - 11/14/04 09:16 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Alright im having a little trouble getting ahold of some tapered 1/2 pint jars. Everytime I come across them, the neck of the jar is smaller, so I wouldn't be able to get the cake out. Anyways I have my syringe and the rest of my equipment...and I know its possible to grow in baking pans (the aluminum ones) so im thinking Id rather grow in them...or either something like this (pic at bottom). But theres one problem. I dont know the exact ratio for vermiculite and BRF that im supposed to use, since the tupperware or the aluminum baking pan is much larger than the 1/2 pint jars. Could someone please tell me how much to mix, and exactly how to do it this way without the jars. I just want to know so I dont mess anything up and dissapoint myself. Thank alot.

Thanks for the quick replys. I dont have a pressure cooker, but heres my idea I could try. First sterilize the tupperware by spraying it with Lysol sufficiently (since microwaving might not work). Then, since I wasnt sure of how much substrate to put in, I would put in the mix for a 1 pint jar. Then put the tupperware in a boiling pot of water, with water going up about halfway up the substrate. Boil for a while, then when it is cooled, put it in a dark place. How is that? If not, how could I fix the problem?

Yes, actually its 6$. But the problem is that every jar in this whole damn town has a tapered mouth.

You didn't say what # plastic that is. Couldn't those plastic containers possibly weaken or melt?

this concept won't work. if you are going to use plastic your going to need number five containers (look on the botom) and your going to need to pressure cook them.

My best advice would be to get some glasses from a salvation army and follow the simple minds tek. Or grow your stuff in untapered jars and case them instead of growing as cakes when they are done.

In case I have to buy untapered jars, how do I do this? And for you dobinky, do I just follow the same method for 1/2 pint jars if I resort to using the glass?

Do a search under my name.

Microwaving with plastic containers works and works well.

once you get the hang of it, IMO its superior to a PC (in terms of time and ease)
