Frank A. DeMartini, Manager, WTC Construction and Project Management, discusses the fact that the WTC towers were designed to take multiple hits from airliners and not collapse, comparing it to poking a pencil through fly netting, DeMartini was adament that the towers would not collapse. DeMartini died in the towers on 9/11, this interview clip was taken from video shot in January 2001.

He forgot about the jet fuel. It was just an example of the inertia that they could withstand.

I would think that by 'plane' he may have been refering to everything that is known to be inclusive in standard aircraft..but who knows

Might be wrong but I seem to remember refutations to things like this saying something to the effect of the towers being designed to withstand the blow of 747s (a guess), which were the largest breed of commercial airliner at the time of construction, but not the blow of 767s (another guess) which were what was actually used on 9-11. Don't quote me on that.

Very interesting! If it was true that they could take multiple hits from 747's then surely they could withstand a single hit from a 767?

I heard about this too years ago right after 9-11.. however, the building was designed to take hits without falling from the airliners of the time... not the newer, big boeings that the hijackers used.

The guy said it could take a hit from a 707. There's a big difference between that and a 747 or a 767.

It also appears that the design was done to take a hit from an aircraft, not accounting for burning jet fuel. As ss7 said, they also designed to take a hit from the largest aircraft at the time, a 707... a 747 is a lot larger.

No 747's were harmed on 9-11. Yes, a 747 is HUGE but they weren't used as missiles... probably because they hold 2-3 times more people. 200-300 people would be REALLY difficult for 5 hijackers to handle... with box cutters.

There were 767's and 757's used as missiles but no 747's. The 767 and 757 are similar in size to a 707... especially the 757 (757 comprised three of the 9-11 missiles I believe).

The WTC, also, had quite a bit of non-pc asbestos removed. This probably helped the fire burn even stronger.

Each tower survived a hit from a plane. It was the burning jet fuel that caused them to collapse.

Yes, it was concluded from the engineers that the extremely hot jet fuel compromised the structural integrety by heating the structural support where they hit. If you watch the video, the top floors collapse upon themselves and the rest of the building falls under the weight. Im sure Osama was not expecting it to happen.

They talked about this all the time when it first happened. The towers did withstand the force of an airplane crashing into them.

They did not withstand the massive fire from the jet fuel.

Yup, I could see the tops of the towers as they melted and bent... eventually the structure just gave way. I had a good view.

the new boeings were quite small actually compared to a 747

That's why they call 747's 'jumbo jets' - because they are fucking huge and have 2 decks on them.

767:
wing span 170 ft
length 201 ft
tail heigh 55 ft
interior cabin width 15ft
maximum takeoff weight 450,000 lb

747:
wing span 211 ft
length 231 ft
tail heigh 63 ft
interior cabin width 20 ft
maximum takeoff weight 875,000 lb

- it's a bit of a no-brainer

Again, there wasn't a SINGLE 747 used in the 9-11 attacks.

When did everyone start thinking they used 747's?

Compare the 707's stats with the 757 and see if there is a big difference.
