to hot

i just want it to be known that sterilizing verm in the microwave can be a little risky. my first attempt was with a microwave safe glass bowl. after about 3 minutes my bowl litterly broke in half. no shattering just a clean break. so then i tried a microwave safe plastic bowl. melted right through the bottom. i had enough left in the bowl to do the job but damn it made a mess. just a warning to others.

"Microwaves are evil, tools of the Devil" -crazy moderator.

I always use teh PC for sterilizing, when you boil a large quantity of liquid
in a microwave there is always a great risk of injury, they sell some small
glass balls made from pyrex specificly to prevent some of these injuries.
they normaly occur because there is no rough surface for the bubbles to
form on before floating to the top... this seems pointless I know...

invest in good quality glassware, pyrex or kimax are ideal for the task
but simax and bomex are more affordable, they're all made from borosilicate
glass which can withstand high temps as well as thermal shocks better than
soda lime glass (what most household galsses are made from)

MycoSupply has 1 liter Bomex beakers for $13.95

Properties of borosilicate glass
Thermal Coefficient of Expansion (0/300 ?C): 32.5 x 10-7/?C
Strain Point: 510?C/950?F
Annealing Point: 560?C/1040?F
Softening Point: 821?C/1509.8?F

Properties of soda lime glass
Thermal Coefficient of Expansion (0/300 ?C): 8.36 x 10-5/?C
Strain Point: 490?C/ 914?F
Annealing Range:480?C-575?C/896?F-1067?F
Softening Point: 575?C/1067?F

Vermiculite should be sterile straight from the bag.

pryex (boroscilicate glass) is still cheap. Wals mart sells pryex dishes for 2-3 bucks....
