baby bella spores
    #3361575 - 11/14/04 09:53 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,
Anyone know where i can get some baby bella spores? I dont know if they are the same as the regular portabella mushrooms or not. Im contemplating trying to get a spore print from store bought ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can they grow on brown rice flour and vermiculite?

They are the same as Portobellos', just harvested earlier.
You can get a print from a supermaket mushroom, but you will need to do some agar work to ensure a good culture.

If you have a mushroom farm nearby, you might want to ask them if you can buy some spawn from them... it works for me.

Cultivation is best done with grain spawn into straw and cased with either verm or peat.
Keep in mind the temps need to be about 10 degrees cooler than cubes.

Enjoy.

Will just casing the grain w/out straw with peat/verm work?

I had limited success, with a small experimental loaf pan using only the grain spawn as a substrate. Only got a couple edible fruits from it.

From a small straw casing I usually average 2 or 3 lbs. easily.

You grow them on cased straw ? No composting at all ?

If you have a ready access to good fresh compost material, you can add it to your straw, say at 50/50. You'll get slightly better flushes, but the straw alone will work just fine.

Great, I will have to try that out !
It's the first time I have heard/read of that ...

By the way: How do you prepare the straw ?

"How do you prepare the straw ?"

That's where I get lazy... simple cut straw (that is sucked up by my leaf blower, so it's not very short) and pasturized for an hour. Hung up to drain for an hour or so, then I spin dry it in the washing machine for about a minute. Dump it in the bins, wait for it to feel cool to the touch, then add the spawn.

 I've grown quite fond of the spin cycle of our washing machine.

When I'm doing my grain, I put 2 cups on grain into a jelly bag, seal with an elastic band, simmer it for an hour, let it drain till it stops dripping, then throw them in the spin cycle for a minute.
Ater that just dump into a bowl and start filling jars. Moisture content seems to work out great  :smirk:
