Mezcal tequila
    #3361548 - 11/14/04 09:41 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

In my shop we've got this 'proper' tequila with the main title on it being MEZCAL (its got the little agave worm in it too).
I was just wondering if the title mezcal comes from the cactus having 'mescaline' in it? I don't even know if the specific cactus does contain mescaline or not (or where the name mescaline come from... might be the region they grow in).

It proudly states that the worm 'opens up the spiritual world' which in english means its a little shroom that can wiggle.

If this is at all true, is this 'agave' cactus known as any other name that people consume for its non-alcoholic properties (like san pedro or peyote etc...).

Wow thanks for great links.

Skimmed through it and it says it does contain mescaline! Only read very quickly but didnt find reference to that being the origin of the name Mezcal.

Wanna buy some now but its ?22 a bottle! (just over $40)

The word, "Mezcal" originates from the Nahuatl language of the Aztecs meaning "cooked pineapple".

"In the1950's it was popular with trendy Californians because of an erroneous rumour that it contained mescaline, a psychedelic cactus derivative and subsequently achieved major world exposure during the Olympic games in Mexico in 1968. Then the growing tourist boom, primarily Americans, ensured that by the eighties it had achieved true cult status.Between 1975 and 1995 sales in the United States increased by 1500%. making it the world's largest importer, followed by Canada, France and Japan"

Ok, had chance to read them both properly today. Like I said, only skimmed through it last night, but the first link says that it was alledged to contain mescaline so just interpretted that in my own way which i guess was wrong...

The Agave cactus species has no mescaline, nor is the worm in the bottle hallucinogenic, but in fact that was a very successful marketing ploy of the Mexican farmers who also had those worms in their area. The worms are becoming extinct BTW. The main agave is called Agave maguey, I have some growing. They are taken after a season and buried in fire pits and cooked, then mashed and fermented. In fact, here's a pic of the very species.
