Why do we never just inoculate poo/straw?
    #3361155 - 11/14/04 07:50 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

How come it's either case your grains, or spawn your grains to bulk?
The contamination factor of spawning your grains to bulk is much greater than just innoculating spawn bags full of poo/straw. Also, I could pasteurize greater amounts of straw/poo anyway, PLUS it is a better producer than is grain, AND I could mix it around to allow it to colonize faster, whereas if I spawned grain to poo, the contam factor would definitely refer me away from stiring my bulk mix during colonization.

Does this not make more sense to anyone else? Why do I never see this in anyone's tek?

spores just dont seem to like germinating in poo with indoor cultivation, if they doo they dont seem to get a foothold. The best thing to do is try it yourself
and try developing a method of making this happen, thats where PF became the
legend that he is, he went against teh Oss & Oerek and experimented

spores are kinda like pandas, if you watch them they wont breed.

Probably talking out of my butt, but;

As I understand it, pasteurizing just knocks down the contamination count. Your grain jars are a clean nursery for your babies. Once they are big and strong, they are able to outnumber the enemy.

As Prisoner #1 said, you might come up with an innovation by experimenting. Someone here did OK by skipping a lot of steps recently with this Tek.

Step 1; Feed spores to horses.
Step 2; Pick mushrooms.

No PC. No flow hood. The horsies birthed the cakes on the ground.

Go for it if you can afford a possible failure. Let us know how it works out for you.

It's called points of contact  That is the secret for fast colonization.

So this method would probably be a real good method for G2G, but not spores?

I'm pretty sure the natural bacteria kills all spores...why it works in nature I don't know...I think it would work if you sterilized your straw/poo..but really this is pointless...using grain spawn is the best method to colonize straw/poo...you can turn 2qts of substrate into probably 10 or more(I'm never measured) within a couple days...this is one the reasons for going bulk...also the grain spawn(especially millet) adds nutrients for better flushes and more of them

Wouldn't a bulk grow colonize faster if I had 2 QT colonized rye and say 20 QT pasturized poo/straw and then G2G 5 x 4 QT bags rather than do the layers? I could mix the grain around and have much more points of contact.

mixing is best...but its very hard to mix in straw unless its been shredded...I highly recommend shredded straw(I plan to get a food processor but I'm just using my blender for now...takes a while but gets the job done) anyways...shredded straw mixes MUCH better than straw cut to 1-3" and it also allows you to fit much more in a given space so you end up with more nutrients...not only that but the spawn run its MUCH faster

recently I've been using 0.5/4 ground up horse poo, 1.5/4 shredded straw and 1/2 vermiculite...2 qts of millet colonizes 4-5"'s of this mix(in a bin thats around 80lt) in 2-3days

EDIT: actually I think it might be around 5 days...I dunno why I was thinking 3..either way its incredibly fast considering the amount of spawn to the amount of bulk

Why so much verm? You praise the nutrient density of shredding your straw but then make your bulk 1/2 verm. I'm not trying to flame you or the grow, but that seems like a contradiction to me.

What are the dimensions of that container? I know 80 liters is big, but it's hard to get a good idea just looking at that.

About how much would you expect off a container that size?

Actually, pasturizing doesn't kill all the bacteria... some good ones help keep the bad guys away while your spawn colonizes.

my $.02

You think that a 1:10 to 1:20 grain 2 bulk transfer in bags so that you could shake them up would colonize faster than the orthodox layering method?
