Oven Bags to replace jars
    #3360329 - 11/14/04 04:36 PM (12 years, 27 days ago)

i recently purchased some oven bags from mijers and am having some trouble with the bags bursting. Has any one used these. they are very inexpensive and would like to make some use of them. I am trying to get bird seed and pop corn sterilized in them. I cook at 15psi for 45 min and the bags rupture. Any help would be appreciate

oven bags are used for pasturizing poo in the oven...not for sterilizing substrate in a pc. my thinking is that they burst from not being made for pressure cooking.

if you buy autoclavable bags on sites such as mycosupply.com or mycobag.com They have bags that can be pressure cooked while being sealed. I take it you're sealing these bags before PC. Try to fold the top down a few times and put a clothes pin holding it in place. This will allow the bag to withstand the pressure as it's not sealed and still become sterile. As soon as you take it out of the PC you must seal it. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I guess water would get in, but this is how many people do it for rye. check this out. http://www.mycobag.com/ryeseedbagtek.aspx If you do it like that I think it will work great. You just gotta try it once and see what happens. If water content ends up being high, you'll know right after it's done then you can try something else. But if you're really worried, then buy the sealable autoclavable bags that mycosupply.com sells.

What is the difference between micro bags and oven bags? besides the filters. are they made of something different than the oven bag. On the Reynolds wrap site it says the bags should not exceed 400degrees. how hot does a pressure cooker get? I just think we should figure this shit out because it could provide a very large area of grain to colonize and their cheaper than jars so has any one out their use these an had goo results?

I just noc'd up my reynolds oven bags. Here's what I did:
I took 4 x boxes (20 bags) of Large sized oven bags, not "regular" or "turkey sized". I cut the tops off of 20 x 2liter bottles (having the top of the bottle where the cap screws on to and the cap itself). I cut as big a hole as I could in the cap without disturbing the threads. I filled the bags about 2/3 full of WBS and I twisted the top of the bag and fed about 4" or so through the piece formerly the top of the 2 liter, then flowered the bag down around the threads, then put the cap on. Then I stuffed a bunch of polyfill into the hole in the cap. I then covered the top with tin foil, dropped 3 bags (my PC's capacity) into a pillow case and PC'd the whole shabang, everything went fine, and I'm getting some GREAT colonization only 3 days later. These things work awesome cause I could get soo many germ points due to the ease of shaking the bags around alot.    Fuck jars, once I master getting these things to germinate, my gal of substrate will colonize just as fast as a 1/2 pint jar.

How many ml of spore solution do you use per bag? What is the size of your bag?
