I want to case 4 x1/2 pint jars. What do u suggest?
    #3359666 - 11/14/04 02:00 PM (12 years, 27 days ago)

I'm really not sure what size tin foil pan I should use.  I'd carry a 1/2 pint jar around the grocery store, but I'm afraid I'd get looked at funny  :frown:  Anyway, even so, it would be hard to gauge.  I'd like to make the casing layer like 2-3 in. deep or so.  Hopefully someone w/ experience will help me out here.

You want to case 4 1/2 jars...well it really depends on how thick you want your substarte to be. If you want your substrate to be 1 inch thick then you have to take in acount how much dry verm. should go on the bottom (not sure how much, but it help suck up x-tra moisture, i just put about 2 inches in my last but i didnt need it all), so, so far it needs to be at least 4 inches thick, so you'd need it to be 4 inches tall but then you have to sprinkle more on top( whatever you perfer, moist verm. or some mixture you perfer, i use coco-coir and verm. randomly mixed, works nice) so if'd probably need to be...7 inches thick? maybe 5? depends on how thick you make everything or how much space you want it to cover and how much space you want between the top and the casing itsself, i can't really tell you how deep to make everything or thick b/c i've just did my first casing but i used a plastic container and it's probably a foot tall i think and the substrate is only an inch think, lol, i've got like 6 inches of free space but thats just how i perfer it but i guess it's not good b/c of sunlight perhaps, well i hope that i've helped you more than ive confused you.....well gl and if u have any more questions then ill try to anwser a little bit better...and it also depends on how Wide you get it, once again depending on how deep you want your substarte, I'm pretty sure Sam could help you out on this one...you out there Sam?..GL...

Thx a lot man.

I see the light!

I'm gonna look for a 6 inch or so deep pan. What I was really wondering about tho, was the length and width dimensions of the pan, not so much the height, which I had completely forgotten about until now. I guess I'll just have to experiment

good idea, well most people i know like a big area of space if they have enough substrate, so them they can get alot in one flush, hence more surface area....you can make your substart deep but over 6 is too much, hell 3's too much for me, but it all depends on how well u case and how much you've expeximented.Well Gl, hope i was of some help.

You don't need that much. You're casing layer is directly related to your substrate depth and should be round about a 1/4 of your substrate depth w/o ever exceeding 2 inches. :goodluck:

I just breezed through the thread, so sorry if I missed something...

I'd use 11x9 or something close do that for 4 cakes. and about 3"-4" deep. You don't want a very large container because gas exchange is harder inside the container. You want to substrate to come up as close to the top as possible.

If you want bottom layer, you can do about 1/2- 1" bottom layer, but you don't need one. 1.5" substrate layer and 1/2" top casing layer. If you have about 1/2" extra, you are in good shape.

Anyways, good luck

Sam

Should the 50/50 be moistened?

Yeah. Moist to near saturation. That's when the casing starts to reflect light a little. Try having a light shining from away to towards you shining down on the casing. You'll be able to tell when you are almost at saturation.

Good luck

Sam

Do you usually soak it in water, and then squeeze it out, or mist each layer?

There is a tek for this
50/50+

I personally don't like to depend on ringing out method. But you'll need to use some water so you can pasteurize the mix. Also, adding water will be needed if you want to mix in pH buffer.

I use enough water to get the above steps done and finalize the moisture content using a spray bottle.

Good luck

Sam
