Reformating C, but want to keep other partitions intact...
    #3357867 - 11/14/04 12:33 AM (12 years, 28 days ago)

I might need to format C: and reinstall win xp, and all the basic proggies to start from scratch.

Here's my problem... I have my drive partitioned into C and D in case of a virus attack. D: is mainly used for games/videos/storage etc.
How can i format C: and keep programs in D: registered?
I do not have the install files for most of these games and programs.  Does anyone know of a software that will backup registry entries for specific programs or drives?

I obviously dont want to backup the entire registry.

Gimme suggestions.

Hey -

You didn't mention what operating system you're using so this may not apply to you. However Windows XP has a pretty good 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard' under Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools. This is specifically designed to backup and restore program settings, just run it (it's pretty self-explanatory) and save the file it creates to your D: partition (or a CD-R if you're worried you might screw up and wipe the whole drive). Once you reinstall, run it again to reimport the settings.

It's not flawless but it works for probably 95% of all programs. I can't think of a better way to do this except for 'finding' the program installs that you're missing .

Peace,

-Y

whats the point in reformatting if you're just going to keep the same registry? you might see some improvement in performance, but not as much as if you would start fresh - just spend a few hours finding all your installers and serial numbers (anything can be found via p2p or elsewhere), reformat, reinstall.

Thanks Ythan, i'll try that when i get home today.

Bi0: Thats the thing. 80% of the shit in the registry is from drive C.  MOST of my programs are on C anyway.  Its just the stuff on D that i want to keep registered.

It would be a clean registry with a chunk of it restored.
