HBWR and Ololiuqui
    #3357554 - 11/13/04 11:10 PM (12 years, 25 days ago)

Can Ololiuqui (Rivea corymobosa) and Hawaiian Baby Woodrose (Argyreia Nervosa) survive a winter (it's not common to go below zero, but it has happened) in the North-East United States. I want to grow them outside and if the roots are covered in snow (well the ground the roots are in) providing some insulation, is there a good chance they would survive?

I don't know man...I don't think they're exactly frost hardy...I'd bring them in if at all possible.

i think he means could the roots survive and go dormant with snow above. the leaves and such would definatly die back. im curious if it could as well.

Yeah I know what he meant, but I'm not sure what temperatures the roots can handle either....it's possible though...I really think it would depend on how old the plant is. If this is it's first winter I'd be cautious, but if it's a well established plant that's more than one year old I think it'll be fine.

Doubt it. The mentioned plants are tropical. They never see freezing temps in their native habitats.

Mine will probably survive the winter simply because rarely go under the 30's here. If you receive a very hard frost(basically if you live anywhere but the south), then they will dead in a matter of moments. I have, however, found they are very drought hardy. You should try it indoors and let climb around, it's a beautiful plant.
