Repressed Vs. False Memories
    #3339665 - 11/10/04 12:29 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

How does one tell if one is remembering something which was repressed or if one is creating a false memory based on new or similar information?

just depends how good the hypnotheraphist . have heard so many stories about people remembering sexual abuse in the past while under hypnosis but when they go to get examined they have no physical signs of sexual abuse that should be there and/or still are virgins...
watch a program on pay tv called "understanding "memories"" i think its called....

I wish I knew! I have a lot of questionable memories and gaps where there should be some.

hmm.... I recently 'remembered' something but I doubt the validity of the memory as a whole, though I am sure that parts of it happened.
The problem is the the flase memory is blending inbetween the memory proper and giving me a huge amount of difficulty with trying to figure out exactly what happened.

I expected to have gaps, so maybe I interpolated with previous experience to colour in the blanks?

its too easy to create false memory merely out of suggestion. Im sure repressed memories exist, but I think most questionable memories are almost entireley created.

An excellent question. As a long-time practicing hypnotherapist, I'll tell you that now, if a client wants to uncover 'blind-spots' in memory, it is important for the hypnotherapist to request in writing a statement of what the client suspects, before therapy begins. The reason for this is to safeguard the therapist from being sued or even having a license revoked for re-traumatizing the client. People have turned on the therapist for uncovering painful events that had become buried in the unconscious. We live in a sicker and sicker world filled with litigious people. You help them with what THEY ask for, and they can't handle it so they turn on you. For the most part, I've turned down more potential clients than I've accepted in the past two years. Fortunately for me it's merely an avocation at this time. After I retire, I have considered supplementing my pension with private hypnotherapy, but that remains to be seen.

It is difficult to discern whether the creative scenarios that emerge from the same unconscious mind that generates dreams is reality based and repressed or pure fantasy. What was for many years thought to be Electra Complex material (when the USA was dominated by the Psychoanalytic model), turned out not to be Freudian-type fantasies of sex between daughters and fathers, but rather real incidences of incestuous rape. Conversely, the search for repressed memories by adult children has resulted in the accusations of rape against fathers, when in fact it was just misinterpreted fantasy material. Frankly, I'm not working in forensics and I really don't choose to go there any more than I choose to help people do 'past-life regression.' Westerners do no understand the subtle differences between say Hindu reincarnation and Buddhist rebirth, they lump the two different doctrines into a half-baked idea of their own, and want the hypnotist to support their wishful fantasies. More dream-ego creations or possibly awareness of elements of the Collective Unconscious which the client's ego personalizes.

If your uncle is touching you, it's probably repressed...

I'm going to explain about "false memories" here...
all thoughts and memories have their origins. There are also memories (genetic library ofinformation ) passed down from generations to generations through cellular consciousness, so some times, when we feel things that doesn't belong to us also comes in mind. For example, if you come from a long generation of alcoholics and depressed folks or perhaps a family generation of good bond and little negetive past, i think it all depends on how the individual takes it and how they are able to transmute the negetive feelings (creates DIS-EASE) passed down into genetic stream.
