Condensation in Popcorn jars
    #3355898 - 11/13/04 03:43 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

My buddy just showed me his 1qt jars of popcorn that he did up last night, and there's quite a bit of condensation in the jars. Is this normal? He did two different batches for a test. One was soaked overnight, then filled into 1qt jars 3/4 full and PC'd for 1hr. The other was just PC'd, and not soaked. All jars have a small amount of vermiculite in the bottom. The kernels were rinsed really well and dried out on a cookie sheet with paper towels stacked on it, then a towel was used to wipe them off. Maybe still not dry enough? The lids do have polyfil filters in them, but are covered well with masking tape and foil. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

it's normaly normal, what isnt with whole grains is adding vermiculite...
the ones that didn't soak or simmer will probably be a problem

I've seen mass sources recommending adding a small amount of verm in the bottom of jars, which is why he did it that way. Also, several cultivators are now suggesting only PC'ing the popcorn, and skipping the soak altogether, and are reporting 100% success with this method.

PCing dry popcorn is pointless, there will not be enough moisture to allow the
growth of mycelium, as for the vermiculite, it usualy goes on top of a PF
substrate to act as a filter... I wish you luck

you can get away with simmering it for an hour and then PCing it but thats
basicly a hot speed soak.

I know what Vermiculite is normally used for, but from the massive amount of sources I've read, most recommend using it with popcorn jars as well to soak up excess standing water. He did soak some, so we'll see if there is a difference between soaked, and pc'd corn.

I read it on a swedish site, a man advices only to PC the popcorn 60 minutes.
THen let it dry a bit, put in jars and PC again 45 minutes.

I did it last saturdaynight, I have some condensation but no water in the bottom. I only used 1CC in the pint I did not shake the syringe :frown: but there is some colonisation going on there.

I just used the popcorn method three days ago and do have slight water build up on the bottom of the jars. Also there is condensation on the sides of the jars. I injected them with 12 cc's of mycelium water and am seeing colonization on the bottom of the jars where it settled. I'm also using the poly fill as a lid filter. Going good so far.

I also am trying a couple of other methods such as filling 1/2 pint jars up and covering with vermiculite just like the pf tek. Going to inject with spore solution today.

WATER IS THE PRECURSOR to all life on earth. You want some water to build up but only a little. The kernels should be slightly split and moist. In between the outer shell and the kernel itself is where you should see the first signs of growth.
