The Dark Tower
    #3355575 - 11/13/04 12:14 PM (19 years, 4 months ago)

How many of you are Stephen King fans and have read The Dark Tower cycle? I finished it a couple weeks ago. I'd be interested in your opinions on it. I absolutely loved it. I read the Gunslinger in 1982. The books just got better and better in my opinion. I think The Drawing of the Three and The Wastelands were the best. King is the master of storytelling IMO.

I'm in the process of reading the series, I'm on the wizard and glass. Its a wicked series I just wish I had more time for reading.

Cool. I read them all and now have started back over with the audiobook series. I listen to it when working out and driving. I'm on Wizard and Glass right now too. I'm about 3/4s of the way through it. It keeps getting better so ENJOY!

yeah Im about 250 pages into the last one. Im gonna be sad when it ends though. I had a thread in OTD about the dark tower a few days ago, but not to many responses. My favorite series though, by far.

beejay- I know what you mean. Having been following the DT cycle for about 23 years, it was hard to believe it had ended. I hope it's made into a movie one day. King says it will be several years before he allows it to be put into a movie though.

A fantasic series of books, incredibly well written. I'm still awaiting an English version of the last installment to come to the book stores though, and the delay is causing me some pain, I've got to find out what happens after Blain the Pain! Tell me!

No! Don't tell me, I'll stall for a while longer. The long rambling, back-chasing, flash-back ridden story line has never been far from my mind. It's funny how a fictional character/s can fit so snuggly as to almost seem like actual people. Or do I just smoke too much when I read?

A movie would be feckin' great! On a LOTR tip, with a cast of.........?

Some books, possibly this series, should never be put to movie.

Movies always lack that extra touch of magic that can only be experienced through reading a book and utilizing your imagination. I'm not a big fan of television, it takes away from mental creativity and also ruins some of the better stories of our time. There are a few shows I watch occassionally though.

I've never even read this series, but I know King is truly the King and I imagine this to be another masterpiece by him.

Anyway, maybe now I'll pick up one of the books. What is the name of the first in the series?

You should pick up Black House then too...it ties in with the Gunslinger books in a crazy way.

The Gunslinger is the first in the series. It was written about 30 years ago. I'd actually suggest reading the second book first. It is "The Drawing of the Three", and then go back and read the gunslinger.

The Dark Tower (Book VII) has a listing in the front of all the books that are tied into the dark tower cycle. Black House and the early book to that one, The Talisman, are only two. The Stand, Salem's Lot, and Heart's in Atlantis are three others. Also, if you haven't seen the short story book "Everything's Eventual", there is a story about Roland in that book.

If you guys do decide to read Black House, read the Talisman first cause Blackhouse is its sequal. As far as a movie goes I would love to see it happen... so long as its at least 24 hours long. It would be an amazing film if allowed the proper time to tell the tale. Who would yall cast as characters? I was thinkin Clint eastwood for Roland obviously, maybe Hallie Barry for Susanna, not sure about the others though.

Shit! I was once again checking for the English version of the last installment of DT and I clocked The Dark House but neglected too pick it up as I was chomping at not finding the one I wanted!
Ah! The Talisman part two!?!
I'll be slipping out of work early on Monday to nab that number! No worries! Find out how Wanderin' Jack's getting on.

Dark Tower rocks! I haven't read Wolves of Callas yet, I'm waiting for it to come out in paperback.
I reckon the best Stephen King story is The Stand, and the ultimate Stephen King is his short stories.
Talisman was great, but I didn't really get off on Black House in the same way.

almost all of king's books have something to do with the dark tower, its scary. For example, in insomnia, at the end it talks about the whole reason ralph was supposed to keep deepnau from killing all those people and alluding to parts of the dark tower and theres a little boy who draws a picture of roland. in salem's lot, there is a father callahan etc.

yeah, I just finished Wizard and Glass on audio book. I'm going through the DT cycle again with the audio books while I'm in the car and while working out. The audios are great to listen to. I agree- Drawing of the Three is the best of the first 4 books, though I enjoyed The Wastelands a lot too. My only problem with the wastelands was that I had to wait so damned long after it for Wizard. But then I had the same wait between books 4 and 5.

im so glad i started late. I love the books so much. my favorite part so far is in the drawing of the three where eddie is being "drawn". Jesus I remember reading that this summer and i was getting so excited i couldn't put the book down all day. I think I read 3/4 of the book that day.

The books are being made into a movie or series of movies or a tv series.  Possibly JJ Abrams as director.  Should be awesome.

i shit you not i was thinking of posting about this very series...

i finished them all and i had to read the first book again just becasue of the way the last one ended...

I don't want to give too much away...

Did you see the latest King movie 'The Myst'? In the beginnign the guy who paints the movie posters...the poster he was working on had a Clint Eastwood (Gunslinger)looking guy and a Door/Portal and a Rose on the other side...I think I was the only one in the theatre who yelled 'Gunslinger!'

I don't know how they could possibly turn it into a TV series or even series of movies...It is soo involved...

I just remeber waiting and waitng for each book to be released...The Wizard and Glass was my least favorite though...but still good back story...

Desperation is great. If you read desperation, you have to read The Regulators too, though. They're sister novels and parallel each other to an amazing extent. Most of the characters even share the same names between the two.

Also, Dark Tower FTW.

I loved the Dark Tower and most Stephen King books.  I gotta say I disagree with all you guys about the movie though...books to movies rarely work out and Stephen King books specifically seem to have shitty movies...anyone ever read "IT"?  and then seen the movie?  This series is epic, I don't have faith hollywood could do it justice.  Maybe if they made a cartoon or something, but even then.

Nah, I respected it.  The first time I read through it, I wasn't into it.  But...not that I've had a few years perspective on it, I wouldn't of had any of it any other way.

i hate that answer "it couldn't have ended any other way". without having it end "another way" there is no way any of you can say that; THAT is also a bogus cop-out defense.

the thing I REALLY disliked was the way he talked down to us readers at the end. To do that crap with Suz, Eddie and Jake and then say "I only added this in because most of you would be stupid to accept the unfinality of Roland's ending" was the most sanctimonious peice of self-serving, and reader insulting crap I've ever been subjected too.

I mean, come on everyone, the ending was straight ripped off from Groundhog's Day for fucks sake...

so did i, and it's a crying shame when it seems Groundhog's Day wrapped itself up better than the Dark Tower series.

I thought the whole series was great and the ending tied perfectly into it.
