Hunting and Natural Selection
    #3355092 - 11/13/04 12:05 PM (12 years, 30 days ago)

i'm not sure if this is the right forum or not, but with all of the gun-talk, I figured it would fit right in.

first of all, I am a hunter. I hunt mainly with bow, but thats just because hunting with rifle isn't even fun anymore. I can put a .22LR bullet up a gnats ass at 150 yards, first shot, every time, and with my larger bore weapons it's up to about 1200 yards. SO bow is a little bit more "sporting. I say this only to show that i'm not anti-hunting.

Now, people that hunt talk about how natural it is. I'm just wondering where in nature a predator goes after the largest animal in the herd? Usually the weak are thinned out, thus letting the biggest animals procreate and pass along their "good" genetics. Why is it that hunters think that destroying the biggest buck is a natural action?

Because they're stupid?

As opposed to wasting your 1 deer on a small, fragile deer that won't provide much meat?

What is a "natural action"?

The larger the deer (bigger rack) usually correlates with age and maturity, which means it has escaped the crosshairs on many occassions and has dumped its fair of genes in the gene pool. I used to bow hunt, and my father does religiously, and he often says how "smart" the bigger racked deer are. They are much more cautious, and generally take more skill to bring down.

Yeah but at the end of the day it's still a deer.

Put an arrow into al-zarqawi and I'd be impressed at your hunting ability.

You think it's harder to kill a person than a animal? Obviously you've never hunted before.

it is obvious you've never hunted a day in your life. Even the pros get outwitted by an animal that can smell 10,000 times better than a human, can see and hear better.

i get a real kick out of anti-hunting people. especially ones who eat meat. let's see... what is more natural and humane...

A)hunting and killing a wild animal in its natural habitat for food
B)breeding and growing domesticated animals entirely for food production, keeping them in overcrowded pens and cages, and pumped full of hormones and antibiotics until the day they are taken off to a factory to be "processed"?

humans are predators. we kill other animals for food. get over it.

never mind the fact that hunters are, as a group, perhaps one of the loudest voices for natural conservationism.

I'd wager that I have given more to natural conservation than your average PETA person or antihunter.

I've never seen a deer... i can't hunt because I'm a fatass with big floppy feet and when i walk the whole forest knows it...

even if you are reasonably quiet, hunting is difficult...

Target shooting is more to my liking... i get to make a lot of noise, and I don't have to kill anything... leave that to the slaughterhouse workers, thank you very much...
