Mycobags
    #3354798 - 11/13/04 06:45 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

As you may know, Im a complete noob to this.
Alright, I've just checked out the Mycobags and they look like the way to go. I've just a few questions that I hope someone can help me with.
Ok, I know they come with everything that you need to grow except the spores. Once, I get the spores and inject it, what do I need to do then? Do I need to put the bag into anything? I plan on just keeping it my closet with a little light for a few hours...is this the way to go? Also, since these are for grain loving shrooms, what suggestions would you make on the spores I should get?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

they wont need light for about a month, after you inocculate the bag with about
1cc of the spore solution, it's best to put it into an incubator thats at
86F/30C, if it's not an option then the colonization times will take a little longer...

when the bag is about 15% colonized you need to mash it a little and shake it
around, this will help speed up the proscess of colonization, you'll want to do
it again when it reaches 40%-50% colonization.

Cambodians seem to love the bag.

Thanks for the help Prisoner .  Wow, a month?  I thought they would grow faster than that.  I've seen some kits that only take 2 weeks before they start producing.  What is different about this once you inocculate it?

those kits are full of shit. It isn't possible to go from spores to fruiting bodies in 2 weeks with a cubie.

they may be finished before then but if its kept at room temp it tends
to slow things a little, that and the additional volume of the substrate
takes a little longer, not much when you consider that it's about 20x the
volume of a half pint PF jar....

Yea, I've heard those kits aren't really worth it. But, I have no means of making a setup right now. I have been wanting to try shrooms for some time now, but no one has them. I just want to get something that will help me get them quickly, so I can just expirience my first trip.
I've got this little room thats kinda like a closet, but there is nothing in it right now. It has a floor board heater one side of the bottom wall. I was just wondering if I could keep them next to that, but not too close. That way it will be warmer than room temp.

myco bags are a reasonable deal... you dont have the hassles and headaches
of the kits, there have been many sold that couldnt possibly grow a mushroom...

Hey, sorry I'm having trouble with understanding the procedure of growing these. I've grown little supplies of weed for a long time, so I don't why this is hard for me.
But, once I inocculate the Mycobags, what steps do I take from there?

basically you inoculate, let the bag fully colonize. Once fully colonize you can initiate pinning and fruit from that. Or a more advanced (what most people do) is case the fully colonized bag. This is putting it in a container with a "soil" like layer on top. This soil layer, also called casing layer provides moisture and stability for more fruits. If you case you will need a fruiting chamber. With a bag, you can fruit directly from it without any of this hastle, but the yields wont be anything more than 15 dry grams at most.

Search for MycoBag under the user name Cervantes.

I have answered sooo many MycoBag questions, I couldn't possibly re-write it all.

Here's the Cliff's Notes,

1. Unfold the bag (So the filter patch can do its thing)

2. Inject the substrate (Inject between the plastic wall of the bag... this allows spores to cover a lot more surface area than if you just inject the middle of the substrate. DO NOT INJECT THE MIDDLE OF THE SUBSTRATE or your bag may not grow anything)

3. Mash the bag (Yes, mash it... MycoBags feel like bricks when you get 'em... after inoculating, you must mash the substrate inside the bag... mash it good... once it feels like potting soil, you're all set.)

4. Wait 3-14 days until you see growth (Usually 4-6 days)

5. Once you see growth, MASH the bag again. (Mash the mycelia, myc will disappear when you mash it, this is GOOD, it will spread like WILDFIRE when it grows back... greatly speeding up colonization time)

6. After the bag recovers from the LAST mash (usually 2-3 days), MASH again.

7. Let the bag finish colonizing. If you mashed correctly, full colonization should only be 2-3 days away.

8. Once colonized, allow the bag to get light (MycoBags are cool and you can let 'em colonize in the light if you wish... but if you expose the bag to light too early, the bag may pin before it finishes colonizing... I NEVER HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS... and I colonize bags in the light.... bags are fun to watch for n00b mycologists... why not watch it grow?)

9. Pins should come 2 days- 2 weeks after full colonization... and shrooms should follow. Shrooms take 4-10 days to grow from pin to mushroom.

10. Cut open the bag and harvest your shrooms... spray the inside of the bag with a little water (Keep the patch dry) and re-seal the bag.

11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 until bag is done fruiting (Most cakes contaminate when they're done producing... don't feel bad if your bag contams after 3-4 flushes.)

That's about all I can think of Right now. Ecuador loves bags too.

Get a Grain based MycoBag... or 4... cubes love 'em.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, this is helping me out a lot. So many helpful people here. Yea, I'm not looking for much on my first grow. Just enough so I can trip out for my first and maybe give my brother some. Then, if I like (which I know I will) I will move up and do it on my own, when I can.

I inject between the wall of the bag and the substrate?

The basic idea is to get the spore solution throughout the bag. If you let it run down the side of the bag it will touch more of the grain and colonize faster. GL

yes, shake it with the cover on for about 5 minutes, flame sterilize the needle
and allow it about 15 seconds to cool, point away from the bag and pierce it,
the solution should run down the side of the bag
shake the bag a little after you inocculate and tape over the hole
