A Question of Colonization Time (or too much of it?)
    #3353805 - 11/13/04 12:16 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I have a question to all other shroom growers out there. Is there such a thing as too much colonization time? If so, how much is too much. Here is my issue. I am going away from january 1st to the 24th. I figured colonization takes about 3 weeks, and thats how long I am gone. Would it not be a good idea to inoculate the jars just before I leave and have them colonize for 24 days and then grow them fully upon my return? I have heard up to a month still in the jar is fine. Is that true?

It should be good. Just make sure it doesn't get too cold or too hot. If you keep them at 70ish, there are drawbacks, but I'm sure that's better than the cakes eating away the substrate for upto additional 2 weeks at 84F.

Anyways... I would keep them in room temp or slightly warmer(70-74) in very very dark place before you leave. They might not be done by the time you come back, though.

Good luck

Sam

Nice. I figured I would be OK. That would be great if they still needed a little more time when I got back. I will be keeping them in a draw in my room, which should stay at about 70. What would happen it if went down to say 67 or say?

Also, the strain of spores I have is "Blue Meanie". Now I have heard that there are some strains goign around that are called blue meanie but are a different strain, in fact a cubensis. In the case that that is what I have, how potent are they?

So overall is it agreed that 24 day of no attention would not be a problem if I injected them just before leaving, and then cold transfer them as soon as I get home?

you may return to a drawer that smells like absolute SHIT if you have contamination problems.

your temp will be an issue, but a nonissue for you, as it will just slow the whole process down, which isn't a negative for you really.

You should be good leaving them..they may not even be colonized when you get back if left at high 60's to low 70's and water content isnt perfect or to tightly packed (if using PF Tek). They'll be close if not done though and it shouldnt pose a problem. Have fun over there!

"cubie is a cubie."

Perhaps but they might not be talking about cubies. I'm fairly sure they are since generally if its not known which it is, its the cubie but there is a pan (its a pan right? its been awhile but im 99% sure, maybe ps cyan though?) called the blue meanie as well which is 2-3 times as potent as its cubie by the same name. It was an attempt by someone (Kreeper I believe) to confuse people into thinking certain cubies (all the ones he has like "wonderlight stargazers") are stronger then others so he could charge 90 bucks a syringe for some cubie strains.
