    #3353696 - 11/12/04 11:47 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hey a friend gave me a mirror pressure cooker for free but it only 4 quart and only fits half pint which is fine with me for free but it is automatic and it only gets to ten psi. is this fine for brf jars i know i need 15 but will this still be better then steaming them, could i do it for like a hour and a half or something. thanks ahead

that's fine for BRF, it is better than boiling them. It may be good with grains if you go a little bit longer, the difference is what 8 degrees or so. If you begin using grains I would try 1 or 2 jars like that and see how they come out.

thanks kapt, hey if that's the time for 10psi can i do half Pinter's of rye berries at 90 min of 10psi because i have some liquid culture and with rye's tendency to have a speedy colonization time and liquid culture to give it a jump start and the half Pinter's to cut down on colonization time, i think it'll lower the amount of contams to a minimal during the colonization period

I'm sure your 10psi would be fine for whatever you need to pressure cook. I read that a way to test if your pressure cooker is hot enough (250 F.) or so - is by running the pressure cooker, and when the weight is wobbling dropping a few drops of water on the lid of your pressure cooker and if the water drop immediately boils like crazy and vaporizes then your all set to use your pressure cooker just as if it were at 15psi.

That's no way to test anything. Of course the water is going to boil. It would boil if the pressure cooker was 212?F.

I wouldnt waste your time on half pint grains. Just Pc for longer and do a test run.

The reason grains are great is the volume of substrate you can colonize in a quick time.

Djred,

What brand is it? It has a rocker right? There are numbers on the rocker. It's typical that the numbers will be 5 10 and 15. You want 15 PSI if possible.

discman1 - what i just said about the water droplet boiling is in a FAQ on the shroomery. Its under the "correct pressure cooker use" http://www.shroomery.org/index/the/default/par/23526 in a link called "Pressure cooker test" http://www.fungifun.org/pcooker/.
