What I've learned from Swami and Gomp combined.
    #3352742 - 11/12/04 04:36 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Swami is a bit of a controversial subject around these parts... I just wanted to go ahead and state some very positive influences that Swami's controversial approach has triggered within me.

I'm much less likely to jump to judgement of someone's statements. Since being exposed to what I've often assumed to be a form of subtle antagonism, I've grown to look past my gut reaction to peoples' posts. Instead of answering what I "think" somoene "might" have been implying, I simply answer the question directly.

By playing the role that he has played, he's effectively taught me to be yielding. Whether or not that was his intention is hardly a concern to me... what matters is that I've learned to be like water.

As for my mention of Gomp... I mention Gomp because his very literal and prominent examples of this type of yielding have been very influential to my own views on what constitutes valid argument. By having several conversations with him in which I could not so much as converse on a subject with him, he effectively showed me how one can be yielding in even the most simple of situations.

While I don't necessarily think that one SHOULD act like this at all times, I've learned to take what he examplifies and apply it liberally, with a logical approach to when I need to and when I do not need to yield.

Thanks goes to both of you.

Perhaps others here have not come to grips with the fact that Swami's approach to things (as controversial as it may be) has actually helped them. It's hard to admit this kind of thing... took me a damn long while, infact.

But if you feel a little relation.. if you feel like maybe some of what I'm saying is sticking to you... feel free to speak up. Swami's approach draws a lot of fire upon himself... which, whether intentional or not, is a selfless action.

Again, I applaud both of you for changing the way I view people who meet certain criteria that I once would have stereotyped into specific groups as a means of writing off.

I don't think either of them are necessarily nazis like you implied.

Hahahaha...

Perhaps a little winky face or a grin at the end of that statement would help to clarify whether or not you were being serious.

I don't think you were.

So, your basing this response on your connotation of my post, and not the literal meaning?

I kid :P

There is a teacher and a student in all of us, and a time to be one or the other. Thats what I believe. Seems like you've gained some good insight about yourself and others from these two. Thats what a collective consciousness is all about.

What I have learned from Jacques (other than those cool National Geographic specials) is to be even MORE abrasive than ever as he is now hip to my tactics and they don't work on him anymore.  :crazy2:

I think Gomp ACTUALLY is a three-year old child prodigy/master and that is his current photo in the avatar. He has NO book of quotes; he just makes them up from his enlightened perspective to fit the circumstances.

Jacques Awakens. Now the initiation may begin.

Swami, prepare the formless holdiay cookies, so Jacques may partake in their scrumptious state of being.

Gomp, bust out the Julebrus, so that we may all celebrate! (know of any way I would be able to have some shipped to the States through mail or internet order, by the way?)

Another form poked and prodded until he awakens.

What would of you learnt if Swami infused with Gomp vice versa?

Into a human form.

If Swami and Gomp became the same person or body.

Melded together into a lesson teaching person called Goami or Swomp.

Understand now?

(this is a joke)

I understand the concept you're conveying--I just don't understand how you expect me to propose what I "would have" learned from such a being if such a being existed because, a.) the creature does not exist, and b.) unless a. was false, and the creature did exist, I certainly could not know anything of it's nature or what it would attempt to teach me; much less what I would have learned from it.

This is akin to asking, "If you met an alien, what would you learn from it?"

I can hardly know. You'd have a much better chance asking the alien instead of me.

Indeed, red soda. Julebrus is like r?dbrus except it is sold specifically for Christmas.. otherwise it is basically a drink for kids. Right?

From what I understand, julebrus is exclusively Norwegian, or at least exclusively Scandanavian... All I know is I drank a hell of a lot of it when I was in Norway, I even hoarded it. Gomp, if you have some time, you should do some snooping around the Norsk websites and see if you can find a julebrus producer that will ship to the States. 'Course, there is one specific brand that I feel is the best...

Well, I don't remember the name of the brand exactly, but if I saw the label, I know I would recognize it (I was doing some of my own searching, and the name "Arendals" seems familiar, it might be that). I'd be interested in any kind that I could get shipped here to the States, really. As far as how much I was thinking of.... I don't know if they require minimum orders or not, and, of course, international shipping is going to be steep... but I'd be willing to pay up to around 700 kr or so on the actual order itself, as long as I got my money's worth....

 Tusen takk, man, this is awesome. When I was hoarding about ten liters of it after Christmas, the last one I had was opened the night I had some mushrooms arrive mysteriously in the mail (from Canada, I think ).  :mushroom2:

I can never figure out what Gomp is trying to say. From what I can tell he just restates everything and adds a question mark at the end.

When gomp does that, its his way of saying, are you so sure about what you just said and how can you be so sure. He gets you thinking.

It's not so much about what he is trying to say as much as how he gets you to think about what you are saying in a new light-a place of uncertainty, the ever changing moment in the here and now.

Indeed.. to further elaborate on Jiggy's comments about Gomp:

He essentially takes whatever conversation you're TRYING to have with him, and brings to light the futility of said conversation. He steers you into "the now" (the moment we are always experiencing) by essentially "stumping" whatever statement you've made.

"By playing the role that he has played, he's effectively taught me to be yielding. Whether or not that was his intention is hardly a concern to me... what matters is that I've learned to be like water."

straight up   at his  old  age  I'm sure the geezer has something to offer us

I wonder what he does for a living with his awesome linguisitic skills.

I think gomp is some crazy norway dude who uses crazy question marks as necessary pauses.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Seriously though Swami, now I am curious... do you have a carreer that allows you to exercise your linguistic abilities as a means of profit? Or do you just do this kind of thing in your spare time for fun?
